McCarthy Stone, the UK’s leading developer and manager of retirement communities, has revealed its new Retirement Living Plus development, on Bewick Avenue in Topsham, has been named Pym Court.

Pym Court has been named after the recently appointed Club Board Chairman of Exeter City Football Club, Richard Pym CBE. Richard’s appointment continues a strong family footballing legacy within the area - his grandfather was legendary Exeter City goalkeeper Dick Pym, who signed to the team in 1911 and went on to play a remarkable 186 consecutive league matches. Sing it out and sing it loud! A Devon town is boosting its green credentials by encouraging people to take reusable cups to local cafes - and there’s even a special song created to celebrate the initiative.

Residents and visitors in Topsham, sitting on the Exe estuary near Exeter, buy an estimated 10,000 takeaway drinks weekly during the busiest times of the year, with most of those single-use cups ending up in bins and then in landfill or incinerated.

Now people are being encouraged to either bring their own reusable cup or buy a stylish and eco-friendly Love Topsham...

RGB Building Supplies recently donated a flooring system to Topsham Allotments & Gardens so it could create awheelchair accessible plot for use by local resident Sarah Piercy.

Sarah has swapped being a record breaking wheelchair athlete – she won the 2000 London Marathon women’s wheelchair event on her first attempt and has since completed nine further London Marathons, as well as becoming the world speed record holder for a woman in a handbike – for growing tree seedlings to plant in the local area.

The UK’s leading developer and manager of retirement communities, McCarthy and Stone, has announced planning consent has been approved at its forthcoming Retirement Living Plus development on Exeter Road in Topsham, which will eventually feature a collection of one and two bedroom apartments for people aged 70 and over.

McCarthy and Stone is now appealing to people in Exeter to enter its ‘What’s in a Name’ competition, and to suggest a name for the new development. The winning entrant will receive a cheque for £200.

Angel of the South takes flight to Topsham

There’s a new Wow! factor in Topsham right now - and it’s got wings!

The town has become the temporary home to the latest creation by east Devon sculptor and craftsman Brendan Rawlings, who makes large, striking, carved driftwood figures.

You can see his most recent masterpiece - The Angel of the South - in the grounds of St Margaret’s Church in Topsham, where it is on display until January.

Topsham’s shops of course re-open for business this week as lockdown ends and Christmas begins - and the town is bouncing back with a vengeance.

More Tea, Topsham?

Topsham has turned on the (socially-distanced) style with its first Big Afternoon Tea.

This was a town-wide celebration of a Devon summer with classic sandwiches, cakes and cuppas taken in streets, gardens and parks throughout the town.

The idea emerged from Topsham resident, Hilary Bush. Hilary’s farming background along with the fun her street had on locked down VE Day, meant she could see this as a great idea to support food businesses whilst boosting spirits in town.

Temporary arrangements to get Topsham back to business safely

Fore Street in Topsham could be temporarily turned into a pedestrian zone, under new plans being put forward for consultation.

Officers from Exeter City Council and Devon County Council are looking at ways of getting Topsham back to business following the coronavirus pandemic, keeping businesses, shoppers and visitors to the town safe.
