Enjoying the great outdoors? Beware of silent killer

With the summer festival season in full flow people in Devon are being warned to keep safe from the silent killer.

Gas distribution business Wales & West Utilities is warning of the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning from camping stoves and barbeques and is asking parents to make sure their festival-going teenagers are well aware of the risks before they set off on their camping weekends.

The warning came just days after Bethan O'Brien, 20, died of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning while on holiday in Devon.

Carbon monoxide is produced when fuels such as...

Tis disappointed by second half display

Following the 2-0 defeat at the hands of Morecambe, Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale was left disappointed with the second-half showing of his team.

Goalless at the break, the Grecians conceded moments after the restart to a Kevin Ellison header. City had looked the more commanding of the two teams in the first half but were unable to truly put themselves back into the ascendency after conceding.

“It was a very competent first half, and a poor second half,” said Tis. “I look back now and wish we had taken one of the earlier chances. As a manager you have to trust your...

Chiefs show their class in derby clash

Three years have passed since Exeter Chiefs last locked horns with Bristol on a rugby field, writes Mark Stevens.

On that occasion, a place in the Aviva Premiership was up for grabs as the two clubs battled it out during the inaugural Championship Play-Off final.

After two blood and thunder encounters, it was the Chiefs who ultimately prevailed, claiming their spot amongst English rugby’s elite for the first time; whilst Bristol were left to lick their wounds and contemplate life another rung down the league ladder.

Since then the Chiefs have flourished in the top...

Police across Devon on alert for illegal raves

Police will again instigate Operation Derig this August Bank Holiday weekend aimed at preventing or disrupting organised illegal raves.

Each year in Devon and Cornwall a significant police resource is required to respond and manage the removal of a number of illegal raves.

This diverts valuable resources away from regular policing and has a damaging impact on the affected communities and the immediate local environment.

In order to address this issue, the Force has mounted intelligence- led operations under Operation Derig aimed at preventing or disrupting illegal...

Phillips is all out to impress Baxter

Former Bristol player James Phillips will be looking to make a good impression against his old club for more than one reason.

As well as bragging rights, a place in the team for the first Premiership game of the season is up for grabs.

Having seen his campaign last season blighted by a knee injury sustained in the home game with Saracens, the imposing forward is now back to full fitness and keen to make up for lost time.

The Bristol-born star featured for 40 minutes in Exeter’s 23-15 friendly win at Scarlets and he will get another run out against his hometown club...

Bentley praises Grecians ahead of League Two clash

Morecambe boss Jim Bentley has paid credit to high-flying Exeter City ahead of this afternoon's game (3pm kick off).

The Shrimps suffered a 3-0 defeat against Portsmouth during their last outing and will be keen to put that behind them.

Bentley told the club website: “It’s always a tough test against Exeter, they’re a good side, with a manager who’s been there a long time and knows what the league is all about.

“They’ve got good players like John O’Flynn who scored two last week. He’s started really well but it’s early days.

“We’re at home, we’ve got to make...
