Exeter shopping centre helps to crack crime

Princesshay Shopping Centre in Exeter is the latest group to join a police scheme to tackle antisocial behaviour. The centre security team is undertaking a training and accreditation process under the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS). £50,000 sports funding up for grabs in Honiton

East Devon District Council is inviting all Honiton’s residents, voluntary and community groups and other organisations to send their ideas to Honiton Town Council on how the cash can be spent on sport in the area.

All the funds available have been out aside by East Devon District Council from recent housing developments in the parish of Honiton (Section 106 money). The district council has a nationally acclaimed policy of involving residents in how this money is spent.

Playing tag with sharks off the west coast of Scotland

Twenty-seven basking sharks have been tagged in the second year of a project to find out more about their life cycle.

The work, which uses small tags attached to the sharks to track their movements, was carried out around the islands of Tiree and Coll by a team of scientists from Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) and the University of Exeter, came to an end in early August.

WESC Foundation calls for entries to Over the Top Charity Challenge

YOU may have driven your car into it, but have you ever fancied abseiling 80ft down Princesshay car park? If the answer is ‘yes’, then you are in luck as WESC Foundation, a specialist centre for visual impairment, is hosting a charity abseil on Saturday 28 September, from 9am until 6pm, where anyone 12 years and over can take part.

The fundraising challenge is being overseen by extreme sports experts Isca Outdoor and last year the event helped raise £6000 for the Exeter-based charity through entry fees and sponsorship.

Busy city workers thinking about making changes to their career path can now access professional advice regarding job opportunities, courses and funding after they leave work for the day, thanks to new, late careers advice appointments.

From September, the National Careers Service in Exeter will be offering appointments until 7pm once a month at its centre in Queens Street.

The centrally located office, just a stone’s throw from the High Street, is convenient for workers who are unable to attend during the day.

On Thursday 12 September, Devon-based law firm Gilbert Stephens LLP will be hosting The Great Devon Breakfast in aid of local cancer charity, FORCE.

The Great Devon Breakfast is an annual fundraising event organised by the local cancer charity and last year, 14 different venues across the county hosted a Great Devon Breakfast, raising £10,000 between them.

Police appeal for information following robbery in Dawlish

Police are investigating a robbery at the Golden Sands Holiday complex in Dawlish, which occurred in the early hours of Monday 27 August. The offenders, believed to be three or four in total and wearing balaclavas, forced members of staff to open a safe containing a large quantity of cash.

One member of staff was assaulted and sustained a fractured jaw. Police are keen to trace a vehicle that was seen close to the holiday park which has been identified as a silver Peugeot 106 vehicle, registration number S186 AAW. Local theatre company returns home with awards

A young emerging theatre company made up of Exeter University graduates, Worklight Theatre, picked up not one, but two awards this summer when they took their show How to Start a Riot to Reading Fringe Festival.

They were awarded Best Production up against every show which featured in the two week festival, and Joe Sellman-Leava of the company was awarded Best Actor.

The show, developed with input from leading social psychologist, Professor Clifford Stott, having received five star reviews last year at Edinburgh Fringe continues to tour nationally.

RAMM contributes to 'world first' exhibition

The British Geological Survey has launched the world’s first 3D virtual fossil collection to the public, including some from Exeter's RAMM.

Thousands of 3D digital fossil models, plus several thousand high quality images, many in 3D, can now be browsed and downloaded for free.

The GB3D Type Fossils Online project, funded by Jisc, has taken fossils from museum displays and dusty drawers and made them available for academics, researchers and fossil enthusiasts to enjoy at their leisure.

GCSE German pupil takes first prize in Goethe Institut Digital Days Competition

A GCSE German pupil from Exeter School has taken first prize in a prestigious Goethe Institut competition.

Middle Fifth (Year 10) pupil Katie Hayman was awarded first place in the News Reading category of the Digital Days Competition for which she had to film herself reading the news in German.

Katie beat almost 150 applicants to win a £50 prize and impressed the panel of judges who said it was very difficult for the selection panel to come to a decision.
