Increasing coastal change has impact on wildlife

Newcomers such as the triggerfish are on the increase but coastal change could put puffins, terns and the Glanville fritillary butterfly at risk

A list of six species that might be seriously affected by our ever changing coastline due to coastal erosion and climate change has been revealed by the National Trust. The six species are: little tern, puffin, oysterplant, triggerfish, Glanville fritillary butterfly and cliff tiger beetle.

Research shows how an increasingly dynamic coastline could radically change the face of wildlife on our coast in the coming decades.

Unlock your powers of observation

Look around you. What do you see? If you were asked to be a witness at a trial, would you be able to remember details and conditions? One of the qualities of successful people in all walks of life is keen observation of things about them. They notice things about people, human nature and the general world around them. Many of us, unfortunately, go through life with our eyes half closed. Perhaps you remember the story of the two streakers who interrupted a New York Yankees baseball game when Yogi Berra was the catcher for the Yankees. In the bottom of the ninth inning, two young people...

Fire crews busy over Bank Holiday weekend

Fire crews have been busy during the Bank Holiday weekend attending a variety of incidents.

At 0.51am today, one appliance from Axminster was sent to Cridlake after calls reporting a shed on fire.

Crews found a garden shed well alight, with the fire spreading to an adjoining fence and greenhouse.

One hose reel jet, small tools and thermal imaging camera were used in extinguishing the fire. The shed, fence and green house were all completely destroyed.

At 10.13pm yesterday crews responded to a call reporting a fire behind the cooker in a domestic property in...

The sun is on its way so make the most of the day!

Make the most of today's weather because, for a change, it's going to be better than the rest of the week!

According to the Met Office, this morning's mist and cloud should clear through the morning. It will then be a largely dry and fine day with very warm, sunny spells and light winds and a maximum temperature of 26 °C.

Any isolated showers will clear quickly, to leave a mainly dry night with clear spells, which may allow some mist and fog patches to form. The minimum temperature will be 11 °C.

On Tuesday mist and fog patches will again clear leaving a mostly dry...

In addition, Babbacombe Model Village has sponsored a full-size silverback gorilla that is more than ten times the size of the miniatures. Back of Beyond was painted by Peter Poole, from Hove, in East...

There's still work to do despite win says Baxter

Exeter Chiefs head coach Rob Baxter insists his side still have areas to work on ahead of the new season despite defeating Bristol 51-7 in their latest pre-season friendly at Sandy Park.

In a dominant display from the Premiership club, the Chiefs simply had too much for their Championship rivals as tries from Ben White, Ian Whitten, Tom Johnson, Fetu'u Vainikolo, Sam Townsend, Tom James and Henry Slade (2) secured a comfortable success.

Bristol countered with a late converted try through centre Fatua Otta, but that was to be a rare moment of joy on a tough afternoon in...

Hot on the heals of a recent public health report that cited "increasing the number of people at a healthy weight" as one the county's top ten health priorities, Devon County Council is asking commuters to leave the car, "get fit and save money".

A new countywide campaign starts this month, encouraging drivers out of their cars, and to walk or cycle to work.

Although Devon is predominantly a rural county, a great many residents live within easy walking or cycling distance to work and yet choose to drive.

Progress in areas, such as Exeter, is being made.
