Response to Adrian Fullam’s ‘Free food for kids’ article

In his recent article, about free school meals, Adrian Fullam was rather misguided in much of what he said. The notion that only the Liberal Democrats could have produced such a policy is ludicrous. Firstly, many within the Labour Party have argued for just such a policy at a national level, whilst many Labour councillors have gone further and achieved such a policy at local level.

Secondly, what makes Adrian’s article and rhetoric so laughable is that where a Labour Council, Southwark, introduced free school meals, as a universal entitlement, they were criticised by Simon Hughes...

Summer is coming to an end on Dartmoor, and bird migration is in full swing. The swallows are on the move, the swifts are gone, and so are the cuckoos. In fact, adult cuckoos leave the country a lot earlier than previously thought, with most of them gone by early July.

This is one of the discoveries that the cuckoo-tracking project, managed nationally by the British Trust for Ornithology, has made. Even though the cuckoo may be one of our most well-known birds, some of them only spend about 2 months of the year in this country. The rest of the time they are on their way to, or have...

Free food for kids

The most eye-catching announcement from the Liberal Democrat Conference in Glasgow was the introduction of free school meals for every child in Reception, Year 1 & Year 2 next September. This policy is emblematic of the profound mood shift in Liberal Democrats generally. The novelty of being in government has subsided and the ability to change the country is now unremarkable to Liberal Democrat supporters. The primary goal of the coalition was to repair the economy and cut back the massive borrowing inherited from the Labour Party. There is a satisfaction that the tough discipline...
