Hospiscare@Home, the new service bringing the expertise of the hospice into the home for residents in and around Budleigh Salterton, Exmouth, Lympstone and Woodbury, has received touching feedback about one of the first patients to use the service.
Earlier this year, Katie, who lived on her own in East Budleigh, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour and given the prognosis that she had 3 months left to live.
Her best friend Alice explains further: “We knew at the end of 2016 that something wasn’t quite right. Katie and I have been best friends for years but I live...
Local radio and TV personality Judi Spiers has set off with her long term pal, Gus Honeybun to visit as many coffee mornings as they can in September.
Supported by Mercedes Benz of Exeter, who are sponsoring the campaign and who have kindly lent Judi a Cabriolet in which she can zip about the lanes of Devon, the pair will be visiting workplaces, homes and village halls to enjoy some home baking, strong coffee and to give thanks to the lovely people in our community who are raising money for local hospice charity, Hospiscare .
Judi Spiers said: “Hospiscare is a charity close...
To celebrate the 35th anniversary of local charity Hospiscare, Dr Becky Baines, Hospiscare’s Medical Director is getting out of her comfort zone and is asking if at least 35 local people will join her.
Becky has bravely signed up for the Great West Run on 15th Oct 2017, a 13.1 mile run through the heart of Exeter. It’s a brave move because the only other race Becky has previously completed was back in 2015, when she took part in a 10K just to prove to herself she could do it.
Becky explains “TeamHospiscare35 was founded by myself and Hospiscare’s Dr Jenny Hayes to celebrate...
After last year’s success, this year’s Jolly Good Jaunt will be held on the morning of Sunday 29th October. It is a 7.5-mile sponsored walk from the Deer Park Country House Hotel through the breath-taking beauty of the autumnal East Devon countryside.
Allyson Fitzgerald and her daughter Emily took part in the Jolly Good Jaunt for the first time, last year. Her husband Mick had been cared for by Hospiscare before he passed away in 2013.
Both Allyson and Emily found the 2016 Jaunt to be a very positive experience: “We both enjoy walking and thought it would be a great way to...
Witness The Fitness! It’s not often you hear a gentleman in his eighties tell you that he has recently taken up extreme distance events. But Len Styles from Honiton is not your average eighty year old. Having always kept himself in good physical nick, (in his younger years Len used to enjoy taking part in ½ marathons and triathlons), rather than easing off Len is increasing the mileage and has found it to be an essential outlet in helping him deal with grief.
Len explains, “My lovely partner, Christine Taylor, died in December 2015. Christine had three operations and had treatment...
Local charity Hospiscare is delighted to announce that for the second year running there will an Open Garden weekend held on 23rd and 24th September at the beautiful private home, Holcombe Court in Holcombe Rogus.
Holcombe Court is a Grade I Tudor manor house situated on the border of Devon and Somerset, and its seven-acre garden is rarely open to the public.
The 2016 weekend raised over £4,000 to support Pine Lodge Day Hospice in Tiverton and it is hoped the amount will be beaten this year. The funds raised will prove invaluable towards ensuring that Hospiscare can...
Supporters are coming from far and wide to take part in Hospiscare’s Breakfast Run at the picturesque Knightshayes near Tiverton on the 17th September.
Sarah Awbery and her daughter are travelling all the way from Bournemouth to take part and are currently busy training and raising sponsorship. They have a special reason for supporting local charity, Hospiscare.
Although it has been over six years since Sarah’s father, Ray Pett, was cared for by Hospiscare, her memories of visiting him on the ward at Searle House in Exeter are still fresh.
Skydiving is the sort of activity many of us dream about. But how many of us get the opportunity to actually do it? And how many of us would be brave enough to go through with it if we did?
Jen Beckenham is one such person: bold enough to throw herself out of a plane into the middle of the sky, near the roof of the world. And this proved a real stroke of luck for well-regarded Exeter-based charity Hospiscare , and for Jen herself, who had a very enjoyable experience which she is certain never to forget.
“The skydive was one of the best experiences of my life,” Jen now says...
Dr. Sarah Jackson has long been a supporter of popular Devon charity Hospiscare , and now holds the position of trustee. But this September will see Sarah go further still as she plans the challenge of completing her first half-ironman to raise funds for the charity.
As Sarah recognises, this is no small undertaking. “It’s happening in Weymouth on Sunday 17th September,” she confirms. “It is a long-distance triathlon which involves a 1.9km open water sea swim, a 90km undulating bike ride and a 21km run. This last one is a half-marathon in itself. The whole thing will take seven or...
In March 2016, Exeter Hospiscare nurse Daisy McLauchlan was travelling back from a weekend break on the Isle of Wight, when a call was sent out over the ship’s tannoy system asking for any doctors, nurses or first aiders on board to urgently make their way to the front of the vessel.
Daisy commented: “I was traveling with my husband Christopher, also a medic who was in the washroom when the call went out. So I made my way to the front of the ship where a crowd was gathered. A man was lying on the floor unresponsive and cyanosed.
