Latin Lounge event raises money for Hospiscare

An evening of Tango and Salsa dance organised by a local nurse has raised £2,000 for Hospiscare.

More than 60 dance enthusiasts attended the Latin dance event, held at Reed Hall, Exeter University, which featured dance demonstrations, lessons and a live tango orchestra.

The evening was organised by nurse Mo Ross in memory of her sister, Geraldine Privett, who received Hospiscare after being diagnosed with a terminal illness in 2012. Geraldine was a ward clerk at Whipton Hospital up until her illness started.

Exeter accountants buy a video laryngoscope for Devon Air Ambulance

Fundraisers at chartered accountants Francis Clark have handed over £4,000 to Devon Air Ambulance Trust (DAAT) to buy a specialist piece of life-saving equipment.

The money, which was raised in a variety of ways including a charity golf day, sponsorship, dress-down days, raffles, bake-offs, book sales and donations, has gone to buying a video laryngoscope, which provides a high definition image of a patient’s airways. Next Sunday, 30 brave participants from Exeter and beyond, will be dusting off their trainers and perfecting their shimmying at 'The Ultimate Danceathon' for Cancer Research UK. Three local instructors will be joining forces to deliver three hours of dance fitness. Included in the day will be the ever-popular 'Zumba', up-and-coming Bollywood fitness sensation 'Just Jhoom!', and 'Swagga Fit'; a fantastic new workout developed by the local 'Vibes Dance Company'!

Exeter YMCA Dartmoor Walk raises over £2,500

Exeter YMCA saw fantastic success for their annual ‘Y-Walk’ event on Saturday 1 June, as a group of more than 40 trekked 11 miles from Okehampton Camp to Postbridge. The participants raised a fantastic £2,590, which will help further the YMCA’s work of providing accommodation and support to homeless young people.

Law firm saddles up for cancer charity's bike ride

Members of Devon law firm, Gilbert Stephens LLP, are taking to the saddle for FORCE’s Century Cycle Challenge, which takes place on Sunday 30 June from Topsham Rugby Club.

The event offers either a 55- or 100-mile cycle from Topsham Rugby Club to Tiverton. The 100-mile ride heads up to Dulverton and over the top of Exmoor, down to South Molton and then meets up with the 55-mile cyclists. Participants then head across country to Morchard Road and back to Topsham via Crediton.

Exeter City urges fans to set their ‘Grecian Goal’

Grecian Goal are looking for more pledgers to join their movement, in order to help Exeter City Football Club raise cash for projects – and to help add to the £7,000 that they have already collected for a series of specific ventures for the club. Currently Grecian Goal has around 40 members, who contribute funds in a bingo-style fashion and have some fun in doing it. The Southgate Hotel has chosen Hospiscare as their Charity of the Year

We are delighted to announce that The Mercure Exeter Southgate Hotel has adopted Hospiscare as their Charity of the Year for 2013.

Hospiscare is a local charity providing an all-encompassing service for people with a terminal diagnosis. All of their services are provided free of charge with the support of the local community.

Employees of the Southgate Hotel have already been very busy the past few weeks fundraising for Hospiscare by organising a Pink Pig Racing event and taking part in the Starlight Walk in Exmouth on 11 May.

Sand Dam success!

A project to help unite a mission community has raised nearly £3,000 for the diocese Sand Dam Lent Appeal. This now takes the total to £8,874.

“I’m absolutely thrilled!” said the Revd Chas Deacon, Diocesan Companion Links Mission Officer. “This will help us to make a good start towards assisting water security in the Thika Diocese in Kenya. There’s a lot to be done!”

WESC Foundation is calling for entries to its sponsored walk - Walk For WESC - which takes place on Sunday 7 July at 2pm at Ugbrook Park in Chudleigh, Devon.
