Exeter historian shortlisted for US military history prize

University of Exeter historian, Professor Richard Overy has been shortlisted for a new American military history prize for his book ‘The Bombing War: Europe, 1939-1945’.

The inaugural Guggenheim-Lehrman Prize in Military History has selected six books for the $50,000 (approximately £30,000) prize supported by The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation and Lewis E Lehrman. Npower report criticised for misleading consumers

Big six power company Npwower has come under criticism for misleading consumers with claims that rising energy bills are the fault of "old and draughty" houses. Npower Chief executive Paul Massara said the prices of gas and electricity in the UK are among the lowest in Europe and expensive bills are "because British houses waste so much energy". In the supplier's second "Energy Explained" report, Mr Massara said: "If we can increase the efficiency of the UK's old and draughty housing, we can ensure that annual energy bills are some of the lowest too." Over £21m of services cut from Devon's people budget

Councillors at a budget scrutiny meeting of Devon county council have recommended a real terms spending cut of £21.4 million from the authority’s people services.

The authority’s people services which cover areas such as the youth service, child protection services, adult social care and schools and education will see some services reduce their abilities.

However due to ongoing spending pressures including those from the review of the council’s child protection services the people budget will only make savings of £4 million on last year’s budget.

It’s been all hands on deck as Devon Building Control Partnership ensures the recent bad weather has minimal impact on public safety.

With high winds, storms, flooding and plummeting temperatures have an effect on roads and buildings, surveyors have been out and about around the clock dealing with dangerous structures and road risks.

In December alone, DBCP dealt with 21 weather-related dangerous structures. Seven of those call-outs were on Christmas Eve. The team has attended nine incidents in 2014 so far.

Heavy rain warning in Devon

Outbreaks of heavy rain spreading slowly eastwards across South West England are likely to hit Devon from 3pm this

later in the day before clearing away east in the early hours of Wednesday.

The Met Office has warned that with the ground remaining saturated, people should be aware of the risk of further localised flooding within the warning area.

The rain is also expected to lead to minor disruption to transport.

PCC urges supermarkets to fight against alcohol crime

Devon and Cornwall’s Police and Crime Commissioner is calling on supermarkets and retailers to join the fight to reduce alcohol related crime and misuse. It is one of the major priorities in Tony Hogg’s Police and Crime Plan. Alcohol related crime and anti-social behaviour costs around £366m / year across the force area. Police appeal after unprovoked attack

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was allegedly assaulted in an attack in Dartmouth at the weekend. The 43-year-old victim was approached by a man in Smith Street between about 11.45pm on Saturday 11 January and 12.15am on Sunday 12 January. He was punched in the face before passing out, and sustained facial injuries. A passer-by who may have seen the attack assisted him. Police believe this was an unprovoked attack. The suspect was wearing a dark grey/blue top and jeans. A 27-year-old man from Dartmouth has been arrested on suspicion of assault and released on police bail...

Heavy fog disrupts Exeter travel

Heavy fog is casuing delays on the M5 between Exminster and Exeter this morning.

The met office has issued a yellow weather warning predicting the fog to remain for much of the morning.

The Met Office's Chief Forecaster said: "Fog patches will affect some parts of the yellow area as early as Monday evening. However, there is potential for fog to become more widespread overnight and into Tuesday morning. Some places within the yellow area will not see fog, but where it forms it could be locally dense with visibility falling below 200 metres.
