Devon's best kept village winners

Winners of the county and district best kept village competition received their awards from the Chairman of East Devon District Council, Councillor Graham Godbeer, last week.

Best Kept Village is a long-established county-wide competition run by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) and sponsored by Mole Valley Farmers.

Villages are assessed by an independent panel of judges who mark competitors against country-wide criteria.

What do you call an ale that’s been brewed for giraffes? That’s the challenge being set by two major local names.

Paignton Zoo and Bays Brewery have teamed up to launch a brand new ale to help raise money for conservation. And they’re inviting people to enter an online competition to give it a name.

Pete Salmon of Bays Brewery explained: “We produced a special ale for The Great Gorillas Project in 2013 and a rhino ale this summer. They were both successful, so now we’re doing another – and this time the theme is giraffes.”

Seven year old Aidan Bown was “transported back in time”, with a ride on a 1966 London Transport Vintage Routemaster, as part of his prize for winning a competition to design a poster. The Woodbury C of E Primary School pupil won the school drawing competition launched earlier this year during Catch the Bus Week, which is co-ordinated by the Greener Journeys sustainable travel campaign and supported by Devon County Council and Stagecoach South West. 7m climbing wall on water is UK first

This weekend Exeter’s canal basin will become the home to the UK’s first artificial climbing wall on water!

A 7 metre high structure is being built on a canal barge and will be floated into the water to provide the wall for the UK’s first inland deep water solo competition.

Staged by local climbing wall, The Quay Climbing Centre, the event has attracted over 40 of the UK and Europe’s top climbers together with over 160 ‘amateurs’ from across the country to compete in the two day event which takes place on the 30th and 31st August.

Open Mic UK 2014 auditions come to Exeter

Open Mic UK is one of the largest national music competitions for singers and solo artists in the UK.

With over 9,000 entrants last year, they search for the UK’s best singers, singer-songwriters, rappers and vocalists who are yet undiscovered and they give them a chance to start a career in the highly competitive music industry.

First Great Western have launched a photo competition to capture the beautiful scenery of the UK.

They're looking to see who can uncover some of the hidden gems of Exeter and the South West, or simply show the places you've travelled to by train this summer.
