UK disposable income on the rise

Britons have seen a three percentage point rise in their disposable income over the last quarter, according to a new report out today. On average, people in the UK now have eight per cent of their take home salary left each month, up from five per cent since last quarter.

The findings come from the latest Disposable Income Index from ISA provider Scottish Friendly, which examines people’s attitude towards saving and investing. Is a road near you going to be repaired

Devon County Council is carrying out £7 million of repairs on roads damaged during the wettest winter on record.

The County Council programme of work is underway on almost 250 repair schemes, restoring nearly 40 miles (63km) of roads across the county.

Hundreds of employees from a waste management firm which collects waste in Devon have geared up to take part in a 2,400 mile, UK cross-country cycle tour to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Big Ride cycle relay, organised by national recycling and waste management company SITA UK, staged a Grand Depárt from one of the company’s northern-most sites near Aberdeen on May 12 and will now finish at its most southerly facility in St Erth, Cornwall, on June 20 – six weeks later. Everys Solicitors in Exmouth has presented a cheque for £500 to the Ladies’ Starlight Walk top fundraiser.

By May 31, Helen Stoneman, from Cullompton, Devon, had raised £1,922.50 for Hospiscare following the 12km walk on May 10.

Her team, Anything But The Book, collectively hope to raise £5,000. Mrs Stoneman has boosted their total further by donating her prize money to Hospiscare.

Everys partner Kim Stradling and Katie Cuthbert, Hospiscare’s head of fundraising, presented Mrs Stoneman with her prize.

The Devon & Cornwall Police Partnership Community Volunteer Awards 2014 will reward and recognise those who give their time to support local neighbourhoods to build strong and cohesive communities.

Warning over washing raw chicken

The Food Standards Agency has issued a call for people to stop washing raw chicken to reduce the risk of contracting campylobacter, a potentially dangerous form of food poisoning.

The call comes as new figures show that 44% of people always wash chicken before cooking it – a practice that can spread campylobacter bacteria onto hands, work surfaces, clothing and cooking equipment through the splashing of water droplets.

Cyclists across Devon are encouraging others to join them by taking to two wheels during Bike Week this week.

Devon skin cancer alert

Skin cancer rates in the South West of England are twice the English average, according to new figures.

There were more than 800 new cases of melanoma diagnosed in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset in 2012, with more than 100 people dying from the disease.

The figures were released as part of a new campaign by Public Health England to raise awareness of skin cancer.
