1985, Harare, Zimbabwe. Robert Gabriel Mugabe is carving a new African vision, Michael Jackson’s Thriller is shredding the charts and Radio Gaga is all we hear.
At school, in order to avoid the boredom of learning by rote and the casual dispensation of corporal punishment, a young boy tells the folk tale Peter and The Wolf to his class. In his telling of it, Russia is replaced with Africa, the duck with a rooster. As his story of The Wolf unfolds, the boundaries between Peter’s world and the boy’s life at home, with his stepfather, begin to blur and merge.
Kusse explores our human desire to connect with others and our need for intimacy. Loosely based on Franz Kafka’s Letters to Felice; an impossible love affair that existed through hundreds of letters, a handful of meetings, two engagements, and no marriages; Kafka’s desire was defeated by his fear. Kusse combines visually poetic images with quirky humour to reflect upon intimacy in an age of virtual relationships.
