Police are investigating after two elderly women living in neighbouring Devon streets had cash savings stolen from their homes. An 88-year-old woman was alone at her home on Sunday around 4.30pm when she discovered a man wandering in the hallway. When challenged he asked her whether she wanted any of her windows cleaned and he left when she said no. She later found several hundred pounds missing from her purse in the bedroom. An Exeter respite centre is to remain closed because Devon County Council cannot afford the refurbishments it needs.
Haldon View Respite Centre, which is one of two County Council-run respite centres in Exeter for people with learning disabilities, is a large period building, that needs among its extensive repairs a complete heating system overhaul including asbestos removal.
However, Pine Park Respite Centre in Honiton will reopen this September after serious flooding last December left the building totally unusable, Devon County Council has confirmed.

A new street enforcement team to keep the city looking good by tackling dog fouling, dangerous dogs, litter and graffiti looks set to be introduced in Exeter.
The team would also get involved in the enforcement of the City Council's car parks, dealing with stray dogs and the removal of small illegal encampments from Council land, which can be associated with anti-social behaviour and drug taking.
