The South West’s leading scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians were recently brought together for the Big Bang South West 2014 Fair, held at the University of Exeter on Thursday the 26th June 2014.

Designed to provide an innovative careers event, the fair aimed to introduce young students to the wide variety of careers available across Scientific, Engineering and Mathematical disciplines. The young technologists and scientists of the future were treated to an enjoyable day featuring elements of theatre blended with immersive learning experiences.

The fair featured over 100 stands spanning regional and national businesses and careers, with a notable presence from Barclays Bank Plc, Eden Project, Exeter College, the Met Office, Paignton Zoo, Plymouth University, South West Water and of course the hosting University of Exeter.

Rokk Media, a leading Digital Agency with an office in the South West, were on hand with Ivybridge Community College to reveal the exciting mobile app they have been working on alongside students at the school.

Their shared stand featured a mind map of this planned mobile application, alongside wireframe diagrams and a suggestions box for visitors to share their thoughts on the app. Demonstration iPads and other tablets completed the digital experience, and an online market research survey was also set up to gather data at the stand with scannable QR codes for easy access.

The collaboration between Rokk Media and Ivybridge Community College originally came about through the school’s work over the last 4 years with the Marine Biological Association. They have been working on a variety of initiatives focussing on marine ecology education and awareness of local shores, and wanted to develop this theme further with an interactive mobile app.

Nick Kerswell, AST Science and the application’s project leader at Ivybridge Community College, explained why the school chose to partner with us: “The sticking point has historically always been technical support and expertise; to bring ideas to reality. Ivybridge and the Marine Biology Association are therefore delighted to have the support of Rokk Media joining us on our journey.”

As a National Award-Winning agency specialising in App Development Rokk Media were keen to be involved and, through continued contact with Ivybridge, have grown to become a technology partner for the school. This accord has given the students exclusive insights into how professional applications are made, and also offer access to the wealth of experience and expertise found amongst the Rokk Media staff.

Commenting on the application development project, Rokk Media Senior Strategist Fredrik Delin said “We appreciate the opportunity to continue to be involved with the local community and to help develop the next generation of tech professionals. We are passionate about local projects and integrating on a national level, and this was the perfect opportunity to bring those two aims together”.

Rokk Media were keen to underline this commitment to by presenting the Enterprising Young Devon awards, which honoured the student projects which demonstrated exceptional innovation and commercial marketability.

The worthy winners of these prizes were:
