Family-friendly event will share practical ways to cut food waste
The award-winning charity, Exeter Food Action, will host the free one-day Exeter Food Action Festival in Princesshay Square on Sunday 20 September, from 10.30am to 4pm.
The event will celebrate the charity’s work rescuing surplus food and redistributing it across Exeter and Devon, while inspiring local people to think differently about food waste.
The Exeter Food Action Festival will offer a hands-on, engaging and accessible programme designed to encourage local people to find out more about cutting food waste, saving money and discovering simple, practical ways to make a difference at home.
Wendy Kearns, Exeter Food Action Manager, says, “Food waste is something we can all help tackle, and this festival is a chance to do that in a fun, friendly and practical way.
"We want people to leave with new ideas, useful tips and the confidence to make simple changes at home - whether that’s using up leftovers, trying food preservation for the first time, or thinking differently about the food they buy and throw away.”
Throughout the day, visitors will be able to enjoy cookery demonstrations, talks and family activities on the future of food, with sessions covering fermentation, preservation, cooking with surplus fruit and growing your own produce.
Families can also get involved before the day through a special ‘Food Waste Hero’ competition featured in Primary Times and on Exeter Food Action’s website.
To take part, families can download or cut out and complete the form, then bring it along to the festival to receive a ‘Food Waste Hero’ certificate and be entered into a prize draw to win a £250 Amazon voucher.
The event forms part of Princesshay’s We Can Do More Week, a programme designed to put the spotlight on sustainability initiatives within the centre and encourage visitors to make more environmentally conscious choices.
