Leisure centres set to reopen across the city

Exeter’s leisure centres are set to reopen in the coming weeks following extensive work to ensure they are safe to use.

A phased reopening will take place from September and each centre will be run under the direct management of the City Council rather than being outsourced to a private company.

The plan is to reopen the centres on the following dates, provided the necessary COVID security measures are complete:

  • ISCA Centre and Exeter Arena – 28 September
  • Wonford Sports Centre and Northbrook Swimming Pool – 5 October

Exeter Daily team launch new website dedicated to women's sport

A new website dedicated solely to women’s sport was launched today (Tuesday 14 July).

Women's Sport Daily will cover all female professional sport – from football, netball and cricket to tennis, golf and Olympic disciplines.

There will also be the chance to promote news about your school, club and local teams in a unique Community section, as well as exclusive interviews and columns from sporting stars and the people who influence how girls and women watch, play and enjoy the action.

BBC local radio stations up and down the country are gearing up to cheer on their local football clubs as we head into the first weekend of live Premier League and EFL Championship football since March.

While the fans can’t get to the grounds, local radio is there to bring you all the colour, drama and excitement straight your homes.

Despite the Coronavirus restrictions, Devon’s schoolchildren will still be able to take part in the popular School Games this year. In fact, it’s ‘virtually’ the same as normal!

Active Devon, working with partners, is launching the ‘Virtual’ games which get underway with a Walk, Jog, Run challenge starting on Monday May 18th. Primary School pupils will have 20, 30 and 40 mile targets, while those in Secondary Schools will aim for 40, 60 and 80 miles. Exeter Eagles BMX Club welcomes a new defibrillator thanks to a generous donation from award-winning housing developer, Burrington Estates New Homes.

The volunteer-run BMX club based in Marsh Barton, Exeter holds race events throughout the year with up to 200 riders competing on race days. The club is a hub for the local community, welcoming over 9000 visitors a year.

Exeter College Coach earns international success

Exeter College Hockey Academy Coach Gus McVey has helped Zimbabwe Ladies to a bronze medal in the African Olympic Qualifying Tournament which was held in Cape Town.

Gus, 48, combines his role as Exeter College Hockey Academy Coach with being Head Coach of the Zimbabwe Ladies’ Hockey side and his developing team outperformed expectations to bag a bronze medal in the qualifying tournament held in South Africa over the summer.

Air Marketing Reign Victorious in Children's Charity Sports Day

Last week, national children’s charity CHICKS challenged local Exeter businesses to compete in their Superstar Games. A first for the charity, the games were held in Princesshay in Exeter City Centre and sponsored by Ashley House Printing, with teams headed up by Smart Estate Agents, Attention Media, KTA, Air Marketing and a mixed team of people from various businesses. THERE was great football and a fantastic final at the annual Exeter City FC One Game One Community Group futsal tournament, where 10 teams competed for trophies and medals.

In the final, “Space Raiders” beat “Ability Counts B” 4-2 following a well contested game. The tournament featured teams including refugees and asylum seeking young people, players with a disability and the recently formed LGBT team, Exeter Apollo.
