Ninjas in training at Exeter's new YO! Sushi

With less than a week to go until the opening of Exeter's latest eatery, YO! Sushi, there was a flurry of activity today as the restaurant was taken over by a team of 'ninjas in training' to get up to speed in time for the opening date of 22nd Novebmer. The conveyor belts are already whizzing around and the staff are raring to go..

Having undergone sushi training in YO! Sushi's Bath branch last year, I have a high degree of respect for these chefs and the expertise used to prepare the exquisitely produced food that YO! Sushi is renowned for. Whether you choose the...

Here's a 'meaty' vegetable dish to tempt you

Try out this tasty recipe for Stir-Fried Bok Choy with Ginger and Garlic...

This Chinese influenced dish is inspired by Fuchsia Dunlop's new book Every Grain of Rice which I reviewed recently in The Exeter Daily. She cooks a version with mushrooms which is also great. Even without the mushrooms this has a lovely meaty flavour and is a great accompaniment to other Chinese meat dishes or even as a main course in its own right with some fried rice or noodles. I will be showing how easy it is to cook when I do the cookery demonstrations at Ashgrove Kitchens' 25th anniversary on Saturday...

A quality business at the heart of the community

As with many successful businesses, Ashgrove Kitchens really grew as a result of personal recommendation. In 1987 Andy Davis had set up a small business in Crediton to supply kitchen units to other trades, such as kitchen designers and fitters. But local people got to hear about it and word of mouth led him to start producing designer kitchens for retail customers.

The kitchens units are individually made at their factory in Crediton by skilled craftsmen, many of whom have been with the business since the beginning. As the company grew they expanded into making other interior fittings...

Mary Quicke's Dairy Diary - November 2012

Leaves whirl off the trees, darkness comes early, the briefly lighter mornings darken too. The sun rises closer to the south, and at noon gets lower every day. A walk through the woods is a walk through lots of leaves, before they start breaking down to leaf litter. The last of the apples come off the trees, a rich cider smell rises, reproaching us for the apples we didn’t pick. I saw a robin, bold and curious, with that intensely sweet song, sitting on the wall in a watery gleam of sun, king in his own territory now the noisy summer visitors have gone. The fallow deer finish their rut,...

Exeter butcher tells porkies about ‘local’ gammon

An Exeter butcher has pleaded guilty to misleading customers by claiming his Danish gammon steaks were ‘local’.

Devon County Council prosecuted Mr Kevin Hollamby (aged 56 of Cherry Gardens, Exeter) after their trading standards team found he was passing off smoked and un-smoked gammon steaks on sale at his Hartnell Fresh Foods store on Longbrook Street, as ‘local’ when in fact they were supplied by the Danish Bacon Company and were of Danish origin.

Enquiries with My Hollamby’s suppliers also revealed no evidence of ‘local’ gammon being supplied or ordered in the last three...

Book review: Every Grain of Rice: Simple Chinese home cooking , Fuchsia Dunlop, Bloomsbury Press, 2012. £25

Fuchsia Dunlop may be known to some of you as the first western woman to train at the Sichuan Institute of Higher Cuisine in China, as told in her lovely memoir Shark's fin and Sichuan pepper (Ebury Press, 2008). Her first book Sichuan Cooking (Michael Joseph, 2001) is an insightful guide to the cooking of Sichuan province, known for the spicy nature of its food and perhaps unknown to many Westerners used to Cantonese cooking which tends to dominate Chinese take aways in the UK...

Charity’s members save on eating out at Buffet City

An Exeter restaurant is offering members of Devon charity Devon in Sight a tasty 25 per cent off the cost of their meals.

Buffet City in George Street is also extending the offer to members’ friends, family and carers as long as they eat at the same time.

Andy Lin, manager of Buffet City, said: “Since we opened three years ago we have always supported local charities, as a local business we like to give back to the community.

“If everyone did the same the world would be a better place! We’re always delighted to be able to support local...
