Flo Gets Fit Week 5: TRX and Tabata-style workout

I've had a hectic couple of weeks with work and a weekend away to London, but have still managed to fit in 3 workouts. I'm really starting to feel like my fitness is improving and Martin is incorporating more advanced exercises into the sessions.

The first session was a kettlebell and bodyweight circuit. The first time I completed the circuit I used a mixture of an 8kg and 12kg kettlebell; doing exercises such as squats, lunges, kettlebell swings, a clean and jerk lift for 30 seconds each. The circuit also incorporated bodyweight exercises such as burpees and walkouts, which...

Flo Gets Fit Week 4: Going It Alone

With Martin away working at a bootcamp, my challenge this week has been keeping up my training on my own.

Before leaving, Martin gave me a programme for me to complete in the gym. As my leg was still a bit sore at the beginning of the week, I went to a couple of spinning classes instead so I wasn't bearing any weight on it. I stayed with my gym buddy Sarah to do some weights after a class as well, just to keep up with my resistance training.

I felt confident enough to get back in the gym by Sunday and in the afternoon, managed to tear myself away from the 6 Nations to go up...

Flo Gets Fit Week 2: Work out until you (almost) pass out

So I’ve made it through my first proper week of fat-loss training, and just about made it to the other side! There were moments when I thought I was going to pass out and others when I thought I was going to puke, and I have never experienced post-exercise aches like I’ve had this week, but it feels amazing to know that I’ve done it!

I’ve completed two more training sessions this week, one resistance and circuit based, and another trip to the quay for more of the dreaded hill sprints.

The resistance session was made up of 2 circuits and a 10 minute boxing exercise. The...

Exeter Business Takes Fitness Seriously

An Exeter-based marketing agency is trialling a new system to increase the physical activity of their staff, with the aim of boosting the overall wellness of the company.

Managers at Big Wave Media are hoping that by tracking their physical activity using MyZone , the team will become more conscious of their fitness.

MyZone is a heart-rate based system that uses wireless and cloud technology to accurately and conveniently monitor physical activity. Employees of Big Wave Media have each been given a heart rate monitor to wear while they’re exercising. When they bring the...

Flo Gets Fit Week 1: Weigh-ins and Hill Sprints

Until fairly recently, my diet and fitness had taken a bit of a back seat to vodka and bacon sandwiches. But about this time last year, fed up of feeling fat and needing a week-night hobby that didn't involve Eastenders, I joined the David Lloyd gym in Exeter. And because I pay a fortune for it and signed up to a year's contract, I felt I didn't have much choice but to go!

It took me a little while to work out that getting fit didn't necessarily mean getting slim, but once I'd realised this, I signed up to the Slimming World plan to give me a bit of guidance on how to eat healthily...

Get Fit In The New Year With Your Local Football Club

If your New Year’s resolution is to get fit, what better way to start than by joining the Exeter City FC running club in January?

The club, which is part of the national Run England scheme, is open to runners of all levels of fitness and organisers are particularly keen on encouraging those who are new to the sport to come along. The courses run in blocks of 10 weeks and cost £2 per session - which is far cheaper than a gym membership.

The first meeting will be held at St James Park on Thursday 10 January at 6.30pm and lasts for around an hour, giving members a...

Health and training tips - a different outlook!

Recently I attended a internship where the speakers were all gurus in their choosen fields, ranging from fitness and strenght to toxicity and health. Here are some of the points discussed:

Poorly fed (grain fed), hormonally enhanced and mass produced animals are more often than not also toxic animals. They store these toxins in the fatty parts of their flesh, just like us! These toxins are then passed up the food chain to us, this is another reason to ‘go organic’. If you decide not to bother with organic / grass fed meat at least cut off the fatty bits to reduce your...

Football scores a health hat trick for hypertensive men

Playing football could be the best way for people with high blood pressure, known as hypertension, to improve their fitness, normalise their blood pressure and reduce their risk of stroke.

Research from Universities of Exeter and Copenhagen, and Gentofte University Hospital in Denmark, published on Monday 15th October 2012 in the journal Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise , suggests that football training prevents cardiovascular disease in middle-aged men with hypertension and is more effective than healthy lifestyle advice currently prescribed by GPs.
