Exeter CAB calls for volunteers

Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau is looking for volunteers and will be holding a recruitment fair at their office on Wednesday 3 December.

They will be recruiting for a range of roles including:

• Advisor – Give generalist advice to clients. • Gateway assessor – Identify issues, next steps and handle emergencies • Reception and information guide – meet people as they arrive and help them access self help resources.

CAB concern over repossessions

Local charity, Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau, has identified a massive 56% increase in private sector tenant repossession cases. This is in comparison with the same period last year and shows that pressure on household budgets is biting harder than ever.

Across all housing sectors, where a CAB adviser has assisted clients facing repossession, clients have avoided repossession in 85% of cases.

Increase in people seeking CAB advice

Local charity Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau has today published its latest advice trend statistics which show that in the first half of the financial year it helped 2,895 people directly with advice and information.

On average, clients with money problems have debts totaling £12,300.98, down by just over a £1,000 on the same period the previous year. However, with Christmas fast approaching, the charity expects to see a further increase in the New Year.

Exeter CAB opens new premises

Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau held a celebration to mark the opening of its new city centre offices.

Guest-of-honour, MP Ben Bradshaw officially opened the charity’s new premises which are now based in Dix’s Field.

And there was a special honour bestowed on one of Exeter CAB’s most dedicated volunteers.

Anna Warne, who has worked as a volunteer and later as a member of the trustee board for more than 32 years, was made the organisation’s first ‘life friend’. The office’s new meeting and training room was also named in her honour.

Payday lenders condemned by CAB

Local charity, Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau, has said the route to more competition in the payday loans market is for banks to offer responsible alternatives.

Provisional findings from the Competition and Markets Authority has found payday loan customers could be paying £5 to £10 more per loan due to lack of competition.

Beneift claimants worried about Universal Credit

A survey carried out by local charity, Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau, shows that many people in Exeter will struggle to deal with universal credit without support.

For most claimants, Universal Credit will eventually replace:

• Income Support • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance • Child Tax Credit • Working Tax Credit • Housing Benefit • Budgeting loans - an advance payment of UC will replace these.

Donations keep Devon warm through Winter

Almost £8,000 was donated to people in need in Devon over the last year thanks to the generosity of people who gave up their winter fuel payments. Devon Citizens Advice Bureau partnered with the Devon Community Foundation (DCF) to operate the Surviving Winter campaign over the winter months of 2013-2014. The campaign saw people who did not require their winter fuel payment donating it via the Devon Community Foundation. Exeter Citizen's Advice moves offices

Exeter Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) will be taking over a ground floor office complex in the Civic Centre – giving it a more prominent location in the city centre.

The bureau, which provides free advice to the people of Exeter, has signed a lease on the building with Exeter City Council.

Introducing ADVICE EXETER

ADVICE EXETER is a newly formed group of local charities offering free advice and information to local people.

Exeter CAB, Age UK Exeter, Young Devon, Shelter, Community Housing Aid and Homemaker Southwest have teamed up to improve the services they offer to people in Exeter. The partnership, which is funded jointly by Big Lottery Fund and the Cabinet Office, held a successful launch event at Exeter Community Centre in March.

Exeter Citizen’s Advice Bureau has said that the Government must do more to work for “those who are making do and can’t save” and warns that many of the government’s austerity cuts “have yet to bite”.
