Sebastian Wright and James Krafft from Exeter School have been awarded a sought-after Arkwright Engineering Scholarship that identifies them as some of the country’s future leaders in engineering and related areas of design. Seven Exeter School pupils have been awarded Arkwright scholarships in the last four years. South West Communications Group has put pen to paper to renew its main sponsorship deal with Exeter Chiefs for a further three years.

The Exeter-based telephone systems, data networks and Internet service provider is preparing to celebrate its 20th year of sponsorship of the Aviva Premiership club and this deal will see “sw comms” firmly in place on the shirts until the end of the 2015/16 season.

New anti-begging campaign launched in Exeter

A new poster campaign has been launched to tackle begging in Exeter.

The campaign highlights the dangers of giving cash to beggars and instead promotes donations to an alternative giving scheme, providing additional funding to projects that help those in need.

The campaign, which is run by a partnership of Exeter City Council, Devon and Cornwall Police and several local drugs and homeless support agencies, also draws a link between drugs abuse and money provided by begging.

Bird keepers at Paignton Zoo have seen a burst of late-season hatchings.

It’s thought to be thanks to the weather.

Curator of Birds Jo Gregson said: “It’s because we had a cold spring followed by a good summer. Many species have bred later this year.”

The current crop of chicks includes toco toucans, red-legged seriemas, southern screamers and black crowned cranes.

Sellers return to the South West housing market in record levels

Rising prices and burgeoning buyer demand have led to significant increases in homes coming onto the South West property market, says the August RICS Residential Market Survey.

During August, 68 percent more chartered surveyors reported increases not decreases in new instructions in the region (from +42 percent in July).
