Law firm Gilbert Stephens LLP is pleased to announce it will be sponsoring FORCE Cancer Charity’s 5km and 10km mountain bike ride event taking place at Powderham Castle on Sunday 8 September.

The fundraising event, only in its second year, departs from Powderham Castle’s grounds at 11am and organisers are hoping even more people will take part this year.

Police appeal for information to locate missing woman in Exeter

Update 13 August: Samantha Daly-Clarke has now returned home safe and well.

12 August: Police are appealing for information about the whereabouts of a woman reported missing from an address in Exeter. Samantha Daly-Clarke has not been seen in Exeter since Thursday 8 August 2013 and there are growing concerns for her welfare. She is believed to have been in the area of Derriford Hospital, Plymouth since Saturday but her current location is unknown.

Top judge to pick heat winners from the South West in Royal Mail's Christmas Stamp Competition

Royal Mail has announced that Martin Clark, Artistic Director of Tate St Ives, will be a regional judge of its Christmas Stamp Design competition. Martin will be giving his expert opinion on a shortlist of 10 entries received from children aged 4-11-years-old from across the South West region. The designs have already been shortlisted from 240,000 entries that have been sent in from children across the UK. More than half of young people put apprenticeships as 'first choice'

New data from research company ICM reveals that 57% of young people in the South West would choose to do an Apprenticeship if one were available. Nationally, the numbers of young people who would like to do an Apprenticeship rises to 56% of those who are already university students and 66% of those who are already employed, but receiving no training. The increasing popularity of Apprenticeships among young people comes after previous business research, released earlier in 2013, showed that employers find apprentices 15% more employable than young people with other qualifications. Government cash for Dartmoor cycling plans

Ambitious proposals to improve cycling access to Dartmoor National Park have received £4.4 million of Government funding today.

Devon County Council and Dartmoor National Park, who are leading the successful bid, have welcomed the announcement by the Department for Transport.

The project will open up access to the moor by improving and completing a number of multi-use trails on Dartmoor as well as creating “cycling hub” sites at Princetown and Moretonhampstead, which will provide dedicated facilities for visitors.

Devon and Somerset fire crews tackle combine harvester fire in Sandford

Several calls were received to reports of a combine harvester on fire in a field at Middle Henstill Farm, Sandford, Crediton this afternoon (10 August).

One fire appliance from Crediton and one from Exeter Danes Castle were mobilised to the incident. On arrival crews requested further assistance from Middlemoor to attend with their light off road pumping appliance.

Crews extinguished the fire using approx 1557 litres of compressed air foam, one C02 extinguisher. three beaters and the light pump were used to extinguish 2 acres of cut corn and hedgerow.
