Bowie comeback named among Mercury Prize shortlist

The 12 shortlisted titles for the Barclaycard Mercury Prize Album of the Year were announced on Wednesday (11 September).

Among the long players from the last 12 months nominated for the "music Booker", were debut albums, titles by previous nominees and established artists and one by a legend, David Bowie.

Bowie's excitedly received comeback album - his first in a decade - The Next Day , finds itself nestling among the hip young things of the more critic-friendly end of the musical spectrum.

Cut down on congestion and costs by joining Exeter's car club

Devon County Council is calling on Exeter to use a car club to cut down on congestion and travel costs. Through LSTF (local sustainable transport funding) the county council is supporting Exeter-based company Co-Cars to buy more vehicles and raise the number of users. By joining the car club residents can book a car when needed without the cost of keeping one on the road full time. Cars are parked in a designated bay and can be unlocked through a smart card. Mike Krage of Exeter-based graphic design studio Krage Design has worked with Val Wilson, Arts & Events Manager, and Catherine Devenish at Exeter City Council to design the distinctive UnExpected Exeter branding. Lord Mayor commemorates Britain's oldest sensory garden

The Lord Mayor of Exeter unveiled a new sign detailing the history of Britain’s oldest sensory garden.

Belmont sensory garden was built in 1939 and is thought to be the first garden designed especially for the Blind worldwide.

The garden was restored in 2007 with a variety of flora chosen for their scent and texture including Chamomile, Mint and Lilac.

Jobseekers get a welcome boost as Stagecoach makes discounted bus travel scheme permanent

Stagecoach, one of the UK’s biggest bus operators, has confirmed it is making permanent its ground-breaking discounted bus travel scheme for jobseekers.

The company launched the country’s first long-term nationwide initiative as a six-month pilot in February 2013, giving thousands of jobseekers across the UK a 50% discount on their bus travel to help them find employment.

New figures show jobseekers are making nearly 20,000 discounted bus journeys a month under the scheme, which is funded entirely on a commercial basis by Stagecoach without any public sector support....

Unemployment rate in the South West unchanged as UK sees an overall 0.1% fall

The South West continues to see one of the UK's highest rates of employment, despite a slight fall in employment of 0.7% to 73.9% in the period from May to July. The rate of unemployment for the region remained unchanged at 6.2%.

The Office for National Statistics has released both national and regional figures for the last financial quarter.

The overall UK unemployment rate dropped by 0.1% from the previous quarter, from 7.8% to 7.7%, though a number of variations can be seen around the country, with some areas experiencing rising unemployment.
