Lib Dems announce 5p charge for plastic bags in England

The government plans to introduce a five pence charge for plastic carrier bags in England. The announcement is to be made by Nick Clegg at the Liberal Democrats' annual conference in Glasgow this weekend.

Aimed at discouraging the use and disposal of plastic bags which may have an impact on wildlife and the wider environment, the plans follow figures from Wales which has seen a 75% reduction in their use since a charge was introduced there in 2011.

Both Wales and Northern Ireland have similar schemes in place with Scotland set to follow next year.

Police Officers to cycle from Exeter to London in charity bike challenge

A group of 21 police officers will be cycling from Exeter to London in aid of a local cancer charity this weekend.

The men will start their challenge from police headquarters in Exeter at 4am on Sunday 15 September and should reach their destination by tea time.

The 170-mile ride, which has been organised by PC Dean Drury and PC Chris Rennie, is expected to take around 12 hours with a few stops on the way.

The police officers, based all around Devon and Cornwall, aim to raise over £500 for the FORCE Cancer Charity in Exeter.

Allergy Conference aims to improve diagnosis and treatment

Across the globe, cases of allergy are significantly increasing. An estimated 21 million people in the UK now suffer from an allergy, with at least one in three people affected at some time in their lives. In Devon and Cornwall, that equates to around 600,000 people.

A conference hosted by the University of Exeter Medical School will bring together a range of experts in the field to analyse the evidence and advise health professionals on how best to diagnose and treat an increasingly wide range of allergic reactions.
