NHS Trust destroy home of nature to gain planning permission in Exminster

This morning the RSPB sent a formal letter of complaint to the bosses Devon NHS concerning the willful destruction of land near Exminster.

Hillcrest is home to a population of Cirl Buntings, a bird so nationally important and rare to find. The RSPB, a charity in support of finding nature a home, believe this is a deliberate opportunity to reduce the nature conservation value of the land which in turn will gain planning permission for new development.

Restricted to the South Devon coastal land, the species of the Cirl Bunting became almost extinct in the late 1980’s in the...

A Paignton Zoo gorilla has joined the Royal Navy on a voyage to the Antarctic.

The adventurous ape, named PEG – Polar Explorer Gorilla - has sailed on board HMS Protector, the Royal Navy’s ice patrol ship. And fittingly, this plastic Paignton Zoo gorilla will be painted with an image of a Living Coasts' macaroni penguin, alongside a number of other penguin species.

The curious arrangement came about after the Executive Director of Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts, Simon Tonge, was invited to lunch on board ship with other dignitaries. Simon: “During conversation the...

The Arctic 30 who were arrested after a Greenpeace protest off the Russian coast are going to be moved.

Lawyers for the 28 activists and two journalists were only informed when visiting them on Monday.

Six Britons including three people with ties to Devon are among those facing charges of hooliganism for their part in the oil drilling demonstration in September. They were previously held in Murmansk but it is suspected they will be moved to another jail in St. Petersburg. There are concerns that moving to the jail the conditions the activists and journalists are under...

Debutant Ceri Sweeney may have provided the spearhead to the attacking edge of the Exeter Chiefs on Saturday, but the Welshman was quick to pay tribute to the defensive efforts of his team-mates as they kicked-off their LV= Cup campaign on a high note.

The 33-year-old fly-half slotted 14 points, including the conversion to Sireli Naqelevuki's second half try, as the Chiefs saw off cup holders Harlequins 19-5 at a packed Sandy Park.

Having trailed to an early Paul Sackey try, the Chiefs powerfully hit back to not only record a notable scalp against Conor O'Shea's side, but...

Ceri Sweeney crowned his first-ever start in an Exeter Chiefs jersey by helping kick his new club to an opening round victory over holders Harlequins in this season’s LV= Cup. Signed in the summer from Cardiff Blues, the 33-year-old fly-half has had to play the waiting game to get his chance with the in-form Devon outfit – such has been the form of fellow playmakers Gareth Steenson and Henry Slade. However, given his chance to shine in the Anglo-Welsh tournament, Sweeney provided the guiding hand as his 14-point haul helped give the Chiefs the dream start. The former Welsh international...

Miley Cyrus has sparked controversy after appearing to light up a joint at the MTV European Music Awards in Amsterdam. The 20-year old took the rolled up joint from her handbag whilst accepting the best video award for ‘wrecking ball’. The singer also opened the awards show with a performance of ‘We Can’t Stop’ accompanied by a latex clad dwarf. "I couldn't fit this award in my purse but I did find this," she said before lighting the joint. Although Marijuana is legal in Amsterdam and is unlikely to result in a criminal conviction the move is sure to further controversy surrounding the...

Knight Frank Exeter conquers SW three peaks

For the first time, the Knight Frank partnership created an annual Knight Frank Day of Giving, which saw all Knight Frank departments and offices around the UK raising money for five chosen charities in October 2013.

The whole Exeter office decided to do what they believe is the first ever “West Country Three Peaks Challenge” where they would walk/climb the 3 highest peaks in their patch within 7 hours. Small in comparison to the 3 highest peaks in the UK, perhaps, but nevertheless a good local challenge. The peaks chosen were:

Brown Willy, Bodmin Moor, Cornwall 1,378 ft...

Exeter City fall in the first round of the FA cup

Report: Peterborough 2 Exeter City 0

Exeter City’s FA Cup campaign was ended for another season at the hands of Peterborough United, who were 2-0 victors at London Road.

City were good with and without the ball, but two goals in the space of seven minutes by Britt Assombalonga and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing sealed a Posh win.

The Grecians were creative and dynamic with the ball but couldn’t quite dissect through the home defence, and Peterborough had the killer instinct to pick off City when the chances came.

Alan Gow was the most notable absentee for the...
