Exeter band hoping to win UK award

After the success of the Oxjam Exeter Takeover earlier this month, the Exeter-based band Moscow Magazine are riding high in Oxjam's national search for Oxjam Band of the Year 2013, up against groups from Manchester, Plymouth and London amongst others. The competition has been running for the past month via the Oxjam page on Facebook, where members of the public have been voting for their favourite. The top Five artists with the most votes will be judged by a panel featuring BBC radio DJ's and representatives from Fender and Oxfam to become Band of the Year. The competition closes...

War Graves in the Higher Cemetery

The Friends of Higher Cemetery will lead a guided tour of the cemetery's war graves beginning at 2pm on Sunday 10th November. This will be a free guided walk, beginning at the chapel, lasting about an hour, and open to the general public. Although there will not be a charge for the walk, any donations to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal would be gratefully accepted.

RAMM to host well being seminar

Exeter’s Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) has organised a free seminar for professionals working with clients of all ages addressing health and well being issues.

The event, on Wednesday 20 November, will showcase the power of cross-sector partnership working to change people’s lives for the better. It will show, through case studies from RAMM and its partners, the positive contribution that museums can make.

Regulations on farm veichle speed could be cut in an effort to help farmers transport goods more efficiently and, Roads Minister Robert Goodwill has announced today

The consultation seeks views on allowing conventional tractors to travel at up to 25 mph, rather than 20 mph. Devon County Council forecasts a £4.4 million overspend in people’s services

In a scrutiny committee meeting today councillors have been briefed on how a potential £4.4 million overspend will affect consideration of the forthcoming budget for 2014/15 which will be agreed next January. The bulk of the overspend comes from Children’s and Adult’s protection services which predicts it will spend more than £3.1 million more than originally budgeted. Great Gorillas auction raises incredible sum

The Paignton Zoo Great Gorillas Project auction has raised £100,000.

A total of £99,800 was bid on the night - a secret donation of £200 made the sum up to six figures.

The project, celebrating Paignton Zoo’s 90th birthday, is supporting gorilla conservation and Children’s Hospice South West.

Life-size model gorillas, sponsored by businesses and community groups, painted in original designs by specially-commissioned artists and displayed in public, created a unique art trail around Exeter and the English Riviera during the summer.

Exeter researchers find that stress makes snails forgetful

New research on pond snails has revealed that high levels of stress can block memory processes.

Researchers from the University of Exeter and the University of Calgary trained snails and found that when they were exposed to multiple stressful events they were unable remember what they had learned. Previous research has shown that stress also affects human ability to remember. This study, published in the journal PLOS ONE, found that experiencing multiple stressful events simultaneously has a cumulative detrimental effect on memory.
