I am not normally alarmist, but increasingly find myself very concerned that our global food systems are under exceptional pressures. We might even say four frightening horse riders stalk our world at this time…
The first is called ‘Global Warming’.
A few months ago ASDA announced that it may not be able to guarantee supply of 95% of the foodstuffs it now sells in twelve months time. Most of the fresh produce sold in their shops is already at risk from climate change. The company’s director for sustainable business suggested that it is imperative that supermarkets start to...
Paignton Zoo is looking for a new gorilla – because their old one has been worn out by too much cuddling!
The large plush toy gorilla in the charity’s entrance hall has become the Zoo’s unofficial mascot, greeting visitors with her laid back attitude and laconic smile. Over the years, thousands of children and grown-ups have had their photo taken with her and her orang utan friend.
Zoo spokesperson Phil Knowling said: “She’s worn out from too much love. All those children have knocked the stuffing out of her! Members and regular visitors are asking after her, but she is...
For sheer cool, Men In Black has nothing on The Busch Ensemble, one of the UK's leading piano trios. The publicity photos for the trio show three slim young musicians dressed identically in sharp black suits and posing with an air of self possession. Watch them perform and you will witness a dynamic partnership with an electrifying chemistry that has earned them numerous accolades, as well as a number of major awards in Italy and Germany. Arts charity Concerts in the West has arranged for The Busch Ensemble to play at Lower Pulworthy, Highampton, near Hatherleigh on 5 July.
As we gather on the beaches of Normandy to remember the extraordinary sacrifices made for peace, there has never been a more important time to underline our belief in collective defence.
Through the searing experiences of moments like D-Day, we learnt how much more we could achieve by working together as allies than by fighting alone. The NATO Alliance was born out of this commitment to increase our collective security and to ensure that the common cause we found through shared hardship would prevent conflict on this scale threatening our world again.

A dash of bright and beautiful colour is set to spread across some of Exeter’s best known green spaces this summer.
Last year saw more than three hectares of new wildflower meadow planted across the city. Now, with summer just beginning, the seeds have grown into plants and their beautiful blooms are beginning to show off their true colours.
The new wildflower meadows are the work of local residents and school students. All volunteered under the Exeter Wild City initiative, a scheme led Devon Wildlife Trust and Exeter City Council, and funded by The Big Lottery Fund and...
