Young donors are crucial to ensuring there will be enough donors in the years to come. Despite the percentage of 17–24 year old blood donors in Devon being higher than the national average, more younger donors are needed.

NHS Blood and Transplant has released the figures at the start of National Blood Week to encourage more people across Devon to ‘get off the bench’ and start giving blood. The need for people to join the Greatest Team in the World is also intensified as donations are expected to be disrupted this summer as people’s attention turns to the Football World Cup....

An emotional end to D-Day trip

Exeter businessman Chris Wollacott and his friend Steve Robertson are cycling to the five D Day beaches in Normandy, France to remember the brave soldiers who fought in 1944.

Steve's father (from London, pictured) was one of the servicemen and lied about his age 18 (he was 17 years old) to be able to sign up.

Chris's Dad Cyril Wollacott (from Crediton) is 88 on the 9th June 14, he was 18 years old all but 3 days by the skin of his teeth. He missed the D Day landings because but was part of the India & Burma soldiers.

With all football fans’ eyes turning towards Brazil, DVLA has today revealed the top ten football number plates that they have sold.

Disruption to Exeter Farmers’ Market

This week's Exeter Farmers’ Market is cancelled "due to unforeseen problems" (Thursday 12 June).

The disruption to the market is due to the extensive works being carried out on the pavement area at the junction of Fore Street and South Street in the city centre.

It was originally hoped that the market would only need to be cancelled for this week but unforeseen problems mean that the site will now be unavailable next week as well.

Job prospects in the South West are the best in the country, with an employment outlook of +15% this quarter, according to Manpower, the global leader in contingent and permanent recruitment workforce solutions. This is a significant increase on last quarter’s Outlook of +10%, and the highest in the region for over three years.

Teignbridge receives sports funding boost

People living in an area of Teignmouth will benefit from a new and exciting health and fitness project thanks to £142,500 of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Community Sport Activation Fund.

Teignbridge District Council is among 88 projects to receive a share of £15 million of funding to support grassroots sport activity across the country.

The Sports Bug project focuses on the Teignmouth West Ward and is all about creating more sport sessions – both traditional and non-traditional – as well as better access to health advice for people aged 14 and over....

Blooming Great Tea Party

The Exeter branch of RGB Building Supplies will be hosting a Blooming Great Tea Party on Friday 27 June in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Taking place between 7.30am and 5pm, those visiting the branch will be able to purchase cakes, tea and coffee throughout the day with all proceeds going to the charity. For the early starters, there will be a breakfast option being served until 10am.

New powers to help domestic violence victims

Police in Devon and Cornwall now have new powers to help victims of domestic violence and abuse.

Where a perpetrator has been violent, or threatened violence, towards a victim or their children and there are unlikely to be any substantive criminal charges the police may authorise a Domestic Violence Protection Notice whilst the perpetrator is in custody.
