Torquay’s coastal zoo and aquarium is celebrating fish in all their forms this summer.

There will be looking, learning – and lunching.

The Living Coasts Fantastic Fish Festival will include cooking demos by top local chefs, trails, aquarium talks, craft activities and dive shows.

Clare Rugg: “Some fish species are part of our collection - others are food! Fish are amazing, vital, beautiful and useful. Fantastic Fish is a year-long event promoting sustainable fishing and a greater awareness of just how great fish are.”

Businesswomen celebrate awards nominations

Local businesswomen enjoyed cocktails and canapés to celebrate their nominations in the Nat West Devon Venus Awards 2014 at Sapphire Living Space on 10 July.

RGB announce first community fund winner

RGB Building Supplies is delighted to announce that Exeter based charity, Farms for City Children, is the first winner of their Well Built Community Fund.

The charity will be receiving £1,000 worth of shower to use at their Nethercott site near Iddesleigh.

Back in May, the builder’s merchant asked charities from across the region to get in contact and tell them how they could help them with a project. RGB was inundated with nominations and, after lengthy discussions, Farms for City Children was chosen to receive the donation of materials.

Cityscape artist makes the right impression

A collection of art that has been over ten years in the making has made the journey to Castle Galleries in Exeter.

The newly curated exhibition, ‘Capital Impressions’, draws inspiration from New York, London and Paris and includes 35 original and signed limited edition art from the master of the modern cityscape artist, Paul Kenton.

The works will be on display at the Castle Galleries, Exeter with Kenton making a guest appearance at the gallery on Saturday 19 July between noon and 3pm.

Exeter-based Crowdcube set to expand

Exeter-based crowdfunding company, Crowdcube, is to double its workforce and open new offices in London and Scotland.

One of Europe’s largest venture investors, Balderton Capital, has taken a £3.8 million stake in the world’s first and leading investment crowdfunding platform.

Crowdcube will complete its Series B round by offering a £1.2 million crowdfunding, which opens on its website on Tuesday 22 July.

Coast Path reopened near Thurlestone

Devon County Council has completed work to re-open a section of Coast Path south of Thurlestone which had been closed since early 2013 when it was severed by a cliff fall. Work has been funded by the Council who also negotiated the route by kind agreement with the landowners.

The new route follows the edge of the field, and whilst slightly longer than the original route retains stunning views along the coast. The path is by kind agreement of the landowners

Invitation to see medieval settlement

Energy firm, RWE, has enlisted the help of experts at Wessex Archaeology, to excavate what is thought to be a medieval settlement at Batsworthy, North Devon, possibly dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries.

The excavation has been requested by Devon County Council ahead of RWE’s construction of a new wind farm at Batsworthy, North Devon, after initial research identified earthworks that suggested previous occupation.

Burglary suspect arrested by dog team

A suspect has been arrested on suspicion of burglary following excellent work by a police dog and his handler. Police Constable Darryl Drew and Police dog Murphy were called to the scene of a burglary in progress in Danes Road, Exeter just after 9pm yestarday (Thursday 17 July). A victim had disturbed a man in his house who made off on foot.

The dog team on arrival located a scent and tracked to a rear garden in another property in Danes Road. They entered the property and located a male suspect in the kitchen. The man, aged in his late 30’s was arrested on suspicion of burglary...

Care staff hold falls awareness event

Staff from the Onward Care Service in Exeter organised an event to raise public awareness of falls and how to reduce the risk of falling.

The team ran a stand in the Oasis restaurant at Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, where they are based, as part of Falls Awareness Week.

The staff, employed by the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust and Devon County Council, linked up with colleagues from RD&E, the Acute Community Team (ACT), the Acute Care of the Elderly (ACE) team and Exeter Community Hospital (Whipton).

Exeter Chiefs forward Don Armand is expecting a big improvement from his side when the 2014-15 Premiership season begins.
