What silly taxes will the dreadful sheriff of Powderham invent this week? Will you help Robin Hood and Maid Marian as they try to spoil his plans?

There will be a Robin Hood Trail for children to follow around the grounds to win a prize as well as all the usual wonderful attractions.

Sessions take place at 12.30 and 2.30. Pick up your session ticket on arrival. This event is included in a child's standard admission.

'Heroes & Villains' sponsored by Francis Clark is the new charity run being organised by FORCE and Hospiscare. The 10k, 5k and family runs will be held at Powderham Castle on Sunday 7th September 2014. These are mixed terrain runs.

Exeter regains its Fairtrade City status

Exeter has successfully renewed its status as a Fairtrade City following an assessment by the Fairtrade Foundation.

The status, which was first awarded to Exeter in 2004, is provided in recognition of the strong support for Fairtrade within the city and the achievement of five qualifying goals.

This includes a wide availability of Fairtrade products in local shops and catering outlets, high levels of support from local people, businesses, voluntary organisations, faith groups and schools, and a committed Fairtrade City Steering Group to co-ordinate the campaign.

Celebrate local food and music at Soupstock

Soupstock is a free summer celebration of local food and music which takes place at Knightshayes near Tiverton on 3, 10, 17 and 24 August,

Soupstock began last year as a way to help new audiences discover knightshayes.

The aim of it was to promote local music to complement the local food served in Knightshayes’ café – much of which was sourced from the walled kitchen garden. All of the entertainment took place outside the gothic stables block against a backdrop of rolling Devon hills.

Third of Brits unable to read a map

Research carried out by GPS technology specialists Garmin, to mark their 25th anniversary, reveals that over a third (39%) of people don’t know how to navigate using a traditional map and need to rely on guided directions in order to get them to their destination. As a result one in 10 (16%) admit that they are heavily reliant on a sat nav, even using it for journeys they make often.

The judging panel for the 11th annual Startups Awards has been announced, with some of the greatest business brains in Britain set to assess entrants across the South West.

Nineteen high profile judges have been selected, including entrepreneurs, CEOs and managing directors of the country’s most successful companies, as well as media experts.

Green Flags to fly over Exeter campuses

The University of Exeter’s Streatham and St Luke’s campuses are among the record-breaking 1,476 parks and green spaces to have received a prestigious Green Flag Award.

The national award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country.

This is the second year running that the St Luke’s Campus has been awarded the Green Flag status and the fourth consecutive year for the Streatham Campus.

Garden party

Local people are being invited to a garden party at Axminster Community Hospital on Saturday 2 August.

The event, from 2pm to 4pm, will raise money for the Conybeare and Willow centres for older people with dementia and other memory problems.

The party will include cream teas, indoor and outdoor games, handmade cards, jams and cakes, a live pianist, a raffle and much more. Entry is free.

The Conybeare and Willow centres, based at the hospital, are managed by the Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust.

Exeter born actor Mark Carey comes to Cygnet Theatre with his acclaimed one man show “Into the Breach”.

Set in 1943 in a Devon village this funny and nostalgic tale centres on George Crocker an odd job man and amateur actor.
