Exeter hairdresser in line for national award

The finalists for HJ’s 2014 British Hairdressing Business Awards have been announced and Exeter’s Holly Baumgart of Jeff Goodwin Hair has been shortlisted for Junior of the Year.

After an intense judging process, category sponsors, key business associates and industry names that are respected for their vision and success, confirmed Holly as a leader within her field.

Along with five other finalists within each category, Holly will now face a two-month wait until winners are announced by a celebrity media host at the black tie ceremony on Monday 8 September at the Lancaster...

Lapford Rose and Sweet Pea Show

Lapford Horticultural Society held their Rose and Sweet Pea Show on Tuesday 8 July. Pictured are the top prize winners Wendy Townshend, Eileen Ridd, Jessica Burrows, Noel Parry, Jean Black and Edna Copus. Judges Mr and Mrs Cleave, from Torrington, said they were very impressed by the standard of the entries. Besides the roses and sweet peas, there was also a small number of classes for vegetables, perennial flowers, fruit and photography. Chairman Sue Brient-Evans said she was delighted with the entries, as last year the weather was so bad, there were hardly any sweet peas.

Police urge motorcyclists to stay safe

Nationally motorcycles, mopeds and scooters make up around 2% of all traffic on the road and yet riders are proportionately over-represented in the collision casualty statistics, contributing to over 20%.

Richard Pryce, Roads Policing Unit Inspector, said: “It is important to understand that in this police area this small percentage of road users accounts on average for about 30% of collisions resulting in death or serious injury, significantly above the national figure. It’s a stark indication of how vulnerable motorcycle riders are.”

Figures, released in The Sunday Times this weekend, show that the number one reason for primary-school-aged children being admitted to hospital is to have multiple teeth taken out.

Provisional figures for the period 2013-14 show that 25,812 children from that age group have been admitted to hospital to have multiple tooth extractions, up from 22,574 three years previously.

Kathryn Harley, former dean of the faculty of dental surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons, said: "We have children who require all 20 of their baby teeth to be extracted. It beggars belief that...

New comedy club to open in Exeter
