Glove at the ready for Lammas Fair

The Lammas Glove is to be raised above Exeter on Friday as part of a ceremony dating back more than 900 years.

The Proclamation of Lammas Fair takes place at 12 noon on Friday (18 July) at the Guildhall. Originating from before the Norman Conquest, the Lord Mayor's procession of the Lammas Glove, includes civic dignitaries and local school children, some in period costume.

This year the Lord Mayor will also be joined by Russian Delegates and the Sobinov Childrens Orchestra from Exeter’s twinned city of Yaroslavl.

Police appeal following assault on fisherman

Police in Torquay are appealing for witnesses following an assault on a fisherman. The victim, a man, aged in his 30s was fishing off Hopesnose Torquay at around 6.30am on Sunday 13 July in his 19ft Orkney fastliner boat. It appears that the boat was deliberately targeted by a shore based fisherman by ‘casting’ his rod in the boats direction.

On this occasion the victim was struck and a hook was embedded in his left cheek. There were a large number of shore based fisherman in the area at the time and police are appealing to them for information to identify the offender who is...

Exeter's Ted Wragg Trust backed to run new Cranbrook school

An Exeter educational trust is being recommended to run Cranbrook’s new two to 16 all-through school.

The trust already numbers Isca, St James and Whipton Barton infants and junior schools among its members.

Named after distinguished Exeter educationist Ted Wragg, the trust is led by Exeter University, Exeter College, Flybe and EDF.

New schools cannot be set up by local authorities but have to be run by sponsors.

Royals win by the odd goal at St James Park

A young Exeter City side were defeated 1-0 in their first pre-season fixture, when Reading were visitors at St James Park.

The result was never the priority though, with fitness and performance the more pressing concerns – and City certainly impressed on those fronts.

Paul Tisdale confirms new City captain

Exeter City manager Paul Tisdale has confirmed that Scot Bennett has been named the new Exeter City captain.

Pat Baldwin, who captained the team in the other half, will continue his role as vice-captain.

Following the announcement, Tisdale said that the versatile 23-year-old is ready for his new responsibilities.

A new study has revealed that gardens in care homes could provide promising therapeutic benefits for patients suffering from dementia.

The research is published in the Journal of the American Medical Directors Association and by critically reviewing the findings from 17 different pieces of research, has found that outdoor spaces can offer environments that promote relaxation, encourage activity and reduce residents’ agitation.

Four injured after car overturns near Bow

Four people were treated by ambulance crews after a car overturned near Bow in the early hours of this morning.

The fire service received a call from the ambulance service, reporting a road traffic collision at Great Wooden, near Bow, Crediton at 2.43am.

One fire appliance from North Tawton attended.

Fire crews confirmed a single vehicle road traffic collision with one car overturned on the public highway.

Drivers urged to avoid the M5 after crash

Drivers are being urged to avoid the M5 southbound after a crash closed the motorway.

The incident happened just before 3am when two lorries collided.

One of the vehicles had broken down on the hard shoulder when it was hit by the second vehicle. The force of the impact knocked the stationery lorry onto its side.

Initially one of the drivers was trapped inside his cab and had to be freed by firefighters who also had to clear up spilled fuel.
