The Fire Brigades Union has called on the government to immediately drop proposed 'unworkable' changes to firefighters’ pension schemes after an academic report on firefighter fitness backed up the concerns firefighters have been raising for three years.
The majority of brigades measure firefighter fitness using a safety-related level of aerobic fitness. The report argues that “firefighters with an aerobic capacity below an occupational fitness standard of 42.3 ml.kg-1.min-1 would not be guaranteed to be safe and effective in their ability to complete necessary roles within their...
Councillor Paul Diviani, leader of East Devon District Council carried out an official ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil the recently restored Withycombe House in St. John’s Road, Exmouth.
The magnificent period manor house which in later years was converted to a school by Devon County Council, has been painstakingly restored to its former glory by skilled craftsmen and converted to luxurious accommodation. The spacious homes include two-bedroom apartments and three and four-bed houses with generous gardens, set in a parkland setting.
The views of students and young adults will play an important role in the battle to cut alcohol related crime and misuse in Devon and Cornwall. It’s a top priority for Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Hogg. “There is no easy answer, but we need to initiate cultural change in our cities, towns and villages. We all need to ask ourselves what kind of place we want to live in? Being drunk is no excuse for behaving badly“ said Mr Hogg. “The cost to our society, not just in policing terms, is massive. It’s unsustainable.” A major survey is underway by Mr Hogg’s office at many local events this...

Devon County Council is to stop providing direct residential care for older people in most of its homes so it can help more elderly people live independently at home or in supported accommodation, and in other residential homes.
Half of the county’s day centres will close with the rest being retained, supporting the most vulnerable and people with disabilities.
Devon already buys 90 per cent of the residential home places it needs from the independent and private sectors.
But it spends nearly 30 per cent of its £70 million residential care budget on providing places...
