Tony Rowe bestowed with honorary degree

The University of Exeter is bestowing key figures from the South West region with Honorary Degrees this week, among 14 Honorary Graduates.

Kicking off proceedings was Tony Rowe OBE, Chief Executive and Chairman of Exeter Chiefs Rugby Club and also South West Communications Group, which he established in 1982.

He was joined on Monday 14 July by Roy Pike who led Torquay Boys’ Grammar School for 27 years, making him one of the longest-serving head teachers. He is an alumnus of the University of Exeter and three of his six children also graduated from the University.

University of Exeter strengthens links with Exeter Science Park

The Exeter Science Park Company has strengthened its links with the University of Exeter through an agreement which will see the University’s innovation arm manage the new Science Park Centre which is due to open in April 2015.

The University’s wholly-owned subsidiary Peninsula Innovations Limited has taken a lease for the Centre to offer flexible office and laboratory space for science & technology companies on the Park. PIL already manages the successful Innovation Centre, based on the University’s Streatham campus.

Venus Awards Devon choose 2014 charity

The Natwest Venus Awards in Devon have chosen children’s charity CHICKS as their charity of the year for 2014.

The Tavistock-based organisation provides free, week long respite breaks for disadvantaged children from across the UK, who would not otherwise have time away from their difficult lives.

The children they support come from a variety of backgrounds – those living in poverty, children that are being neglected or abused, either mentally, physically or sexually, children who have lost parents or even children who are full time young carers.

Public to have their say at council meetings

Members of the public will have a right to speak and question politicians at full meetings of Devon County Council, if new proposals are agreed.

The council’s Conservative leader John Hart says people should be able to make representations and quiz Cabinet members at the start of each full council meeting and during the annual scrutiny committee examination of the budget.

The plans were agreed unanimously at a meeting of the council’s political leaders and whips.

Phil Dollman believes lessons learnt last season will help to serve the Exeter Chiefs well ahead of the new 2014/15 season.

Exeter’s High Street is enjoying a welcome injection of colour thanks to the goodwill of a local nursery.

Tim and Simon Boyce have kindly offered to sponsor and plant up some of the hanging baskets in the High street for a second successive summer.

The brothers, who own and run a specialist hanging basket nursery at Shillingford st George near Alphington, had noticed that due to Council cut backs, the hanging baskets near McGaheys on the High Street had not been refilled. The Bishop of Exeter has welcomed the news that women will be able to become bishops.

Bishop Robert said there was "relief all round" after the General Synod voted to approve women bishops.

Attending his first ever General Synod he said there was joy after the vote - but not triumphalism.

An atmosphere of respect for others was present throughout, he said. General Synod approved the legislation with a convincing majority.

Decade of charity golf days raises £109,000

Hospiscare is celebrating after raising £109,000 during a decade of the hugely popular Charity Golf Tournament held in Exeter.

A total of 46 teams, mainly from Exeter but also from all over the country, played in glorious sunshine at the Exeter Golf and Country Club.
