Teignbridge is doing its bit to help stamp out smoking habits by signing up to the Local Government Declaration on Tobacco Control.

Teignbridge District Council has signed up to the statement of intent to do all it can to help reduce smoking rates among its communities as well as highlighting the harm smoking causes.

The council joins many others, both in Devon and across the country, in taking comprehensive action to address the matter.

Murder inquiry: police return to Kingsbridge

Detectives investigating the death of a 17-year-old boy in Kingsbridge returned to the town one week after the tragic event to appeal for the public’s help.

A murder inquiry was launched after the death of Alex Peguero Sosa, from the Kingsbridge area, who was found with fatal injuries at a bus shelter in Prince of Wales Road around 2.20am on 6 July.

Lee Dent, 42, of East Portlemouth, Salcombe, has been charged with murder and remains in custody following an appearance at Exeter Crown Court on 10 July.

Greens are warning a new EU-US trade deal known as the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) could undermine agriculture in the South West, and in particular have a devastating effect on the region’s many small scale farmers. Tougher tests will help eradicate illiteracy and innumeracy

New tougher primary school tests in maths and English will further the government’s objective of ensuring nobody leaves school without being able to read or write and with a solid grounding in maths, Education Minister Elizabeth Truss said yesterday (Monday 14 July).

Sample questions for the tests taken by seven-year-olds and 11-year-olds - in maths, reading, and grammar, punctuation and spelling - reveal the higher standards expected of children in the 3Rs.

Pedestrian dies after collision in Exeter

A pedestrian has died following a collision which took place in Exeter on Friday 11 July 2014 around 4.15pm.

The collision occurred close to Poundland in Sidwell Street, Exeter when an elderly woman was in collision with a pedal cyclist.

The woman suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital for treatment.

She died in hospital on Saturday morning.

The cyclist, a local man, suffered minor injuries.

Lapford Horticultural Society held their Rose and Sweet Pea Show on Tuesday 8 July. Pictured are the top prize winners Wendy Townshend, Eileen Ridd, Jessica Burrows, Noel Parry, Jean Black and Edna Copus. Judges Mr and Mrs Cleave, from Torrington, said they were very impressed by the standard of the entries. Besides the roses and sweet peas, there was also a small number of classes for vegetables, perennial flowers, fruit and photography. Chairman Sue Brient-Evans said she was delighted with the entries, as last year the weather was so bad, there were hardly any sweet peas.
