Pitch perfect: Football meets rugby in Exeter’s Strive ‘25 takeover

Exeter City Community Trust, the charitable arm of Exeter City Football Club, is stepping into a new sport as it joins a major national initiative to grow women’s rugby in the city ahead of the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025.

The organisation, which is more used to the beautiful game than the oval ball, is joining with Exeter Chiefs and Exeter City Council as the delivery partner for the Strive ‘25 Rugby Challenge, a national programme aimed at engaging 25,000 women and girls in rugby across host cities. Travel agents send 6-year-old to Disney after cycle challenge raises £10,000

STAFF from eight Hays Travel branches have taken part in a cycle challenge alongside the firefighters from MiddlemoorFire Station who have cycled from Exeter to Basingstoke over a two day period this month.

The travel agent staff matched the firefighters’ miles using exercise bikes in the eight shops along the route.

On the 30th of May this year, firefighters from the Exeter group of the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue service rescued Amelie Aitken from a terrible road traffic collision. Tragically her father passed away at the scene.

CAB fundraiser tests breadth of knowledge

Exeter Historic Guildhall was a hive of concentration for The Family Law Company’s quiz night in aid of Citizens Advice Exeter.

Teams battled it out for the coveted top spot, answering questions on topics including sport, current affairs and song lyrics.

The evening was opened by Lord Mayor of Exeter Councillor Peter Holland, and the erudite quiz master was TFLC solicitor Stephen Sowden.

Foam, lasers and neon clothing: Glow in the Park is coming to Exeter

UV paint, neon foam, luminous face paint and electric light shows. No, it’s not a night out clubbing in Ibiza, it’s the “ultimate fun run” – and it’s coming to Exeter.

The Glow in the Park fun run invites people to dance, walk, jog or run though a 5K route with nine different ‘Glow Zones’. It takes place on Saturday 9th November at Westpoint in Exeter and will help raise money for its partner charities, the Down’s Syndrome Association and Down Syndrome International .

Luxury holiday cottage business Higher Wiscombe is partnering with Ottery’s Rusty Pig to raise funds for local cancer care charity Hospiscare.

The dining event on October 15 is an early celebration of the Indian festival Diwali and will feature curries created using locally sourced produce.

RGB gets ball over the line and exceeds Chiefs’ fundraising target

As a member of the Exeter Chiefs Foundation XV programme, RGB Building Supplies had pledged to raise £1,500 in a year and is delighted to announce it’s exceeded that target.

Thanks to customer donations from a company-wide breakfast morning, an auction for Exeter Chiefs match tickets and two members of staff completing a charity sky dive the company has raised a fantastic £1,923.73.

The money will help the Exeter Chiefs Foundation continue to support a wide range of charities in the area. Since it was set up in 2011, it has raised over £1m and supported over 75 different...

Devon Ramblers celebrate 50th anniversary

On Saturday 7th September Devon Ramblers celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the founding of Devon Ramblers, part of the Ramblers Charity, with an event on Hookney Tor, Dartmoor. Nine walks were led by Devon’s local Ramblers groups, each taking a different route to walk to Hookney Tor, which is between Moretonhampstead and Widecombe. Starting points for the walks included Hound Tor and Widecombe. South Devon Ramblers, for example, walked from Widecombe in the Moor to Hookney Tor via the Two Moors Way.

Generous community helps young people in Africa ‘build’ for the future

The Exeter branch of RGB Building Supplies and Devon-based charity Amigos are thanking the local community for the amazing response received to their recent appeal to donate preloved tools. These will all now go on to help young people in Africa lift themselves and their families out of poverty.

Amigos has been working in Uganda for nearly 20 years and for the last nine it has been providing vocational training in construction skills. Throughout June and July, a total of 33 ‘dumpy bags’ of tools were collected across the RGB network and in some cases, instead of donating preloved...

Housebuilder employees run Cardiff Half Marathon in memory of colleague

Colleagues at a national housebuilder will run the Cardiff Half Marathon in memory of 32-year-old Dean Fletcher, who tragically died last year after taking part in the event.

The husband and father - a management accountant at Bovis Homes’ South West region - passed away following a cardiac arrest after completing the course last October.

In his honour, eight Bovis Homes’ colleagues will be running the 2019 event to raise funds for CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young), a charity that aims to reduce the risk of cardiac arrest in those aged under 35.

September is blood cancer awareness month and local charity Exeter Leukaemia Fund (ELF) will be collecting and raising awareness across Devon to help raise funds and awareness for the charity.

ELF is currently looking for volunteers to donate an hour or two of time to help at various collections around the county. Volunteering is a great opportunity to get out and about in the community, meet new people and help a great cause.
