PM honours Exeter lecturer

A university lecturer who founded the Care Homes Reading Project that supports hundreds of elderly people in Exeter has been named a Point of Light by Prime Minister David Cameron.

Dr Johanna Harris has worked as an English lecturer at the University of Exeter for almost five years.

EAD Ecology, a firm of ecological consultants based in Exeter, has been named ‘Consultant of the Year’ by Redrow Homes (West Country) in the annual awards ceremony for suppliers and subcontractors to Redrow’s West Country division.

EAD Ecology’s Director Matt Cowley said: “We are delighted to have won this award. We have very high standards and it is important for our team of ecological specialists that their good work is recognised. New funding available for Dartmoor communities

Dartmoor National Park has just launched its Communities Fund for 2015/16. The Fund, supported by the New Homes Bonus from West Devon Borough, Teignbridge and South Hams District Councils, will support capital projects that ensure the long term viability of valued existing community facilities and services, or create new community infrastructure to meet identified community needs.

South Molton Recycling Centre to re-open

South Molton Recycling Centre will re-open on Saturday 3 October, Devon County Council has confirmed.

The site has been closed since the end of June after the company which was running the site went into administration.

An agreement has now been reached with Devon Waste Management Limited to run the centre on behalf of the County Council.

From Saturday 3 October, the recycling centre will be open on Saturdays and Sundays, from 10am to 4.30pm.

Householders' recycling efforts praised

Householders living in Exmouth (The Colony) have made an extraordinary effort in the first week of a new recycling trial by collecting almost 60% more recyclables in just seven days.

Around 900 homes in the area have just started an improved recycling trial where residents are, for the first time, able to recycle cardboard and mixed plastics along with their usual extensive number of other recyclables including glass, metals, paper, plastic bottles, textiles and food waste. All the recycling is being collected weekly at the kerbside by East Devon District Council contractors....

Car treasure hunt for Parkinson's UK

On Sunday 4th October a Car Treasure Hunt will take place in and around East Devon starting in the car park at Greendale Farm Shop (EX5 2JU), from 1.30 – 2.30pm. The Treasure Hunt (including a couple of walking sections) takes about 3 hours to complete and there will be all sorts of things to look out for along the route. Teams, of which there needs to be at least two adults will be issued on arrival with details of the route to follow, all in rhyme.

Exeter School welcomes new chaplain

Exeter School is pleased to welcome new chaplain Reverend Tom Carson, who was licensed officially in Chapel by The Bishop of Crediton, The Right Reverend Dame Sarah Mullally, on Saturday 19 September.

Mechanic turned artist unveils exhibition

Dan Lane, aka Mechanica, an assemblage artist who uses pieces of machinery to create spectacular sculptures, will be showcasing his works at an Exeter gallery next month.
