Exeter skittlers aiming for British title

Exeter's Two Tribes skittles team are currently defending their mixed team title in a tense finals of the Butcombe British Skittles championships being held in Torquay.

The team who play out of St Thomas Social Club showed impressive form in the play off stages and are tipped to do well again.

But two popular teams, Heavitree Heroes who were mixed team runners up last year failed to qualify this time. Meanwhile the Sinners, women's champions in 2008 and 2011, are not competing this year.

If you're into baking, enter the first ever Great Broadclyst Cake Off to win baking prizes and be crowned the first ever winner! Entry is just £1, categories are: under 10 (cupcake or cake), 10-18 (3 cupcakes or cake) and adults (cake). Entries will be judged on taste and appearance. Judging is at midday.

If you're not into baking, come along and marvel at the entries whilst enjoying your cuppa, take part in the activities or make yourself some goodies while you're at it!

It is also the time of year when the Environment Agency urges people to check their oil tanks to protect the environment and reduce the risk of potentially large financial losses.

Leaked oil can end up in drains, many of which lead directly to rivers, streams, lakes and even garden ponds, having the same effect as pouring it directly into the watercourse.

Oil is poisonous to fish and other wildlife and smothers plants and just 2 litres of oil could seriously pollute the volume of fresh water needed to fill an olympic-size swimming pool.

Roy's bee keeping experience

Roy Powney, 78, from Exeter has been honing his bee keeping skills on Princesshay’s rooftop garden which is home to five hives and more than 60,000 bees.

Through Age UK Exeter, Princesshay’s Charity of the Year, Roy has been visiting the roof top garden every Thursday since April. Working alongside Jason Wallis, head bee keeper for Princesshay, Roy has been closely involved in caring for the bees which has been a passion of his from a young age.

Princesshay’s city bee project, now in its third year, continues to thrive on the roof tops of the busy Exeter shopping centre....

New Devon artist sells painting in US

Ottery St Mary-based artist, Abi Whitlock, is celebrating the successful sale of her first artwork through online art marketplace, Artfinder, just days after she joined the site.

The 23 year old whose application to sell on the site was approved on Saturday 5 September, sold one of her hyper-real acrylic paintings, ‘Adrift’ to a customer in Illinois on Monday 7 September for the list price of £3,400.

Abi has only recently committed to her art full time, recently moving to Devon with family after graduating from catering college.

Only 20 months after taking over the business, Hanlons Brewery is now happily established in its new location in Half Moon Village, near Exeter. The business has grown from strength to strength and is seen as one of the leading West Country Breweries.

In 2014 Hanlons Port Stout received a Gold Award from Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) South West and was subsequently asked to be a guest beer at this year’s Great British Beer Festival held in Olympia in August 2015.
