One of Britain’s rarest mammals needs greater protection

New research has revealed that just 1,000 grey long-eared bats, a species native to Devon, remain in the UK and numbers are declining.

"The UK’s grey long-eared bats need greater conservation efforts before we lose them” says Dr Orly Razgour, who is calling for this little-known species to be afforded ‘UK Priority Species’ status in the newly published Conserving grey long-eared bats in our landscape: conservation management plan .

Motorcyclist dies after collision with a car in Paignton

Police were called to a road traffic collision which occurred just prior 2am this morning (Sunday 4 August) on Kings Ash Road in Paignton. The collision occurred between a small hatchback car and a motorcycle. The motorcyclist, a 19-year-old man from Buckfast, was treated by paramedics who attended the scene and medical staff at Torbay hospital but tragically died later this morning.

Devon survey reveals a catastrophic year for British barn owls

Britain's largest regular survey of barn owls, carried out once a decade in Devon, has revealed the extent of the devastation hitting the popular bird's breeding season.

According to the Barn Owl Trust, conservationists are describing 2013 as "the worst barn owl breeding season for over thirty years."

The Trust says: "A run of extreme weather events since 2009 has devastated not only people and property but barn owls and other wildlife. The final blow was March 2013."

With the news that employers receive an average of 46 applications for every graduate vacancy, one graduate is counting his blessings after securing an internship at the very organisation he went to for careers advice.

A recent report by High Fliers stated that although there has been a rise in employment opportunities for graduates this year, competition for graduate jobs remains ‘intense’.
