Charity Quiz to benefit two local charities

Local law firm, Gilbert Stephens LLP, is set to host another of its popular charity quizzes on Thursday 15 May at Kennaway House, Sidmouth, to raise funds for two local charities – Sidmouth Voluntary Services and FORCE Cancer Charity.

The event, organised by the law firm for the third consecutive year, starts at 7pm and hopes to attract over 70 people and raise hundreds of pounds on the night.

Held in Kennaway House’s Cellar Bar, a buffet will be included in the £30.00 team entry fee and the organisers are calling upon local people to get behind the fundraising event....

As part of National Stalking Awareness Day (Thursday 24 April 2014) Devon and Cornwall Police are reminding people not to suffer in silence and report any incidents of stalking to the police. As many as one in five women and one in 10 men report being stalked at some point in their lives (British Crime Survey 2009/10). Stalking is unwanted and obsessive attention by one individual towards another. It can involve persistent phone calls/texting, sending of gifts, following a person or damaging their property, plus with the increase of technology stalking can also take place online.

Bronze award for building site manager

Site manager Nathan Pyett from independent developer, C G Fry & Son has won a Considerate Constructors Scheme 2014 National Site Bronze Award.

Nathan received his award in London and was joined by his partner Julia Simmonds and Kevin Murch, Construction Director of C G Fry and his wife Teresa. This award is in recognition of improving the image of construction and was for Holmdale site in Sidmouth built for DCH (formerly Devon & Cornwall Housing).

Time is running for business rate relief

Around 800 businesses across East Devon can still benefit from a scheme offering rate relief of up to £1,000 for the next two years. But time is running out to sign up to the scheme.

The initiative, adopted by East Devon District Council, is designed to give local retail businesses of a rateable value of less than £50,000 a chance to compete on a more level playing field with internet retailers.

Businesses to benefit include shops, post offices, restaurants, cafes, pubs and garden centres.

Daily Flybe flights from Exeter to London

Direct flights between London and Exeter are set to begin this October as part of a major expansion deal by locally-based airline Flybe. Three city-to-city flights will run from Exeter to London City Airport as part of a five year agreement with the capital airport. Dartmoor gets £150k for flood repairs

Dartmoor National Park to receive a £150,000 of funding for urgent repairs following the winter storms and flooding, the government announced today. The funding will be used to repair the numerous footpaths and bridleways damaged in the storms and drainage infrastructure will be restored. The funding is the largest single share from a governmental pot of nearly £400,000 set aside for the national parks worst affected by the severe winter weather. People who want to vote in this year's elections must make sure that they are on the electoral register by Tuesday 6 May.

This is the last chance for those not yet on the register to be able to vote in the Exeter City Council and European Parliamentary elections taking place on Thursday 22 May.

Exeter Flood Defence scheme to begin

The first phase of the Exeter Flood Defence Scheme is due to start this summer as part of a £36bn programme of infrastructure developments across the UK. The scheme which will cost around £30m is expected to bring an estimated £200m of direct economic benefit to Exeter.
