Dick Knittington appeal

Exeter Northcott Theatre is appealing for knitters to help prepare for its Christmas pantomime.

The theatre would like volunteers to create knitted cupcakes that can be used during the 60 performances of Dick Whittington, which takes place from Saturday 2 December until Sunday 7 January.

As a thank you for the support the Northcott hopes to receive through the appeal, it has teamed up with Home-Start Exeter and Devon & Cornwall Housing Association to offer 500 free pantomime tickets to families who may not be in a financial position to come to the theatre this Christmas...

Exeter shoppers were delighted when double Olympic gold medallist, James Cracknell OBE, ran through Exeter’s City Centre to raise awareness of Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) being a chosen charity of Exeter’s Great West Run.

Owner of Exeter’s Great West Run, James led a pack of runners and supporters of the charity through a small race through the City centre on Friday 30 June, before crossing an inflatable ‘Finish Line’ in Princesshay.

Businesses in Devon looking to reach new customers are being encouraged to apply for the latest round of Devon County Council’s Business Promotion Grant.

Grants of up to £1,000 are available to help firms in the county to promote their products and services to wider audiences at trade shows and events.

More than 20 companies have benefited from the funding scheme launched by Devon County Council last year as part of its Devon Delivers programme, which promotes Devon as an innovative business location with great businesses.

The Dissenters Graveyard will be open to visitors between 11am and 4pm on Saturday 8th July.

Visitors can view the near-completely restored Graveyard, now dignified with gates and railings; inspect transcribed copies of many of the grave inscriptions and will be able to read short biographies of some of those buried there.

The City of Exeter Rowing Regatta takes place on Saturday 8 July on Exeter Quay this year for a full day of sprint races.

Paul Wilson, Exeter Regatta Chairman said: ‘There are over 140 races and 234 crews at this years’ regatta, including an open eight charity event for Rowcroft hospice at 5:45pm.

Stars from the sporting, entertainment and culinary world came together last Friday 30th June to celebrate Devon's community sporting heroes and heroines for the 20th Devon Sports Awards.

The glittering celebration evening was the culmination of a six month nomination and shortlisting process. The Devon Sports Awards recognise and celebrate the best of both community and professional sport in Devon. A Devon taxi driver, who stood up for an elderly couple being preyed on by gang of rogue traders, has been honoured with a Hero Award.

Chris Smith, 37, owner of Black Swan Taxis, Dawlish, was awarded the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) Hero Award at their annual conference on Wednesday 28 June.

Wins for two Exeter teams in community diversity football tournament

THERE were wins for two Exeter community football teams, Marcel's Allstars and Alphington Ladies Football Club, who won, respectively, the male and female 5-a-side community diversity football tournament, when 10 male and 10 female teams competed for trophies.

The tournament, held at the University of Exeter’s Streatham Sports Complex on Sunday, July 2, was organised by Exeter City Supporters Trust’s One Game One Community Group, supported by Exeter City’s Football in the Community.
