Bee creative at Devon Wildlife Trust’s family fun day

Devon Wildlife Trust is inviting families to ‘bee creative in the garden’ at a special wild bee family fun day next week. On August 3, the charity will be opening the gates to the Cricklepit Mill wildlife garden for a family event that aims to celebrate bumblebees and solitary bees, heroes of the pollinator world. Children will have the chance to create a range of bee themed craft items, including alder bees to hang in the garden, bee mobiles, badge making and bee jewellery. Dementia researchers raise thousands for charity in epic bike challenge

Five dementia researchers at the University of Exeter have pedalled over an epic 350 miles from London to Paris, raising thousands of pounds for Alzheimer’s Society in a gruelling four day challenge.

The team has raised more than £11,000 towards their £12,000 target to boost the Society’s ground-breaking dementia research, and they still hope to achieve their goal. To donate, visit their Justgiving page.

An Exeter researcher has just been awarded £362,337 from leading charity Diabetes UK to understand if certain genes can protect people from developing Type 2 diabetes. Dr Hanieh Yaghootkar who works at the University of Exeter Medical School has been awarded Diabetes UK’s R D Lawrence Fellowship, set up in recognition of the life and work of the late Dr R D Lawrence, co-founder of Diabetes UK. New chartered surveyors announced at JLL's Exeter office

The Exeter office of leading property consultancy JLL has announced one new promotion and two newly qualified chartered surveyors.

The team has been strengthened after two of its staff, Adelle Moore and Kye Daniel, passed their Assessment of Professional Competence Exams to become qualified chartered surveyors.

In addition, Mark Walter, from the residential team, has been promoted to local director level from associate director.

Exeter College celebrates record breaking year with 1,000th Apprentice

Exeter College is celebrating a record breaking year by celebrating welcoming their 1,000th apprentice.

The 1,000th Apprentice is Jordanna Broom who is a higher engineering apprentice at the University of Exeter. Jordanna enjoyed her initial engineering training and has decided to pursue her career through one of the college’s higher level apprenticeships.

To celebrate this milestone and the ongoing relationship between the college and the university, a memento has been made by the University’s engineering apprentices and presented to the college.

In March 2016, Exeter Hospiscare nurse Daisy McLauchlan was travelling back from a weekend break on the Isle of Wight, when a call was sent out over the ship’s tannoy system asking for any doctors, nurses or first aiders on board to urgently make their way to the front of the vessel.

A total of 35 worthy community schemes have had Parishes Together Fund applications approved by the decision making panel of East Devon District councillors between April 2016 and March 2017. The same funding is available again now.
