Brewin Dolphin fundraises for young hearts

Eight Exeter-based businesses have competed in a mixed netball competition to raise nearly £500 for Jay’s Aim – a charity focused on reducing the number of young people who die from sudden cardiac death in the South West.

Organised by wealth management company Brewin Dolphin, the hotly-contested event took place in the sports hall at the University of Exeter’s Streatham campus. Those taking part were legal firms Michelmores, Trowers & Hamlins, Gilbert Stephens, Ashfords and Stephens Scown, accountants PKF Francis Clark, the charity Jay’s Aim and Brewin Dolphin.

Warning of possible travel disruption as heavy snow forecast for parts Devon

Devon County Council is warning of the potential for travel disruption in parts of the county this afternoon (Thursday 31 January) and into tomorrow morning.

A band of rain and sleet is forecast to hit Devon from midday which could fall as snow from around 3pm today.

Snow response plans for Haldon/Telegraph Hill and the North Devon Link Road are being activated from midday.

Although the amount of snow is expected to vary across the county, areas of high ground could see up to 10cm of snow over a five-hour period.

Severe Weather Protocol activated to encourage rough sleepers to come in out of the cold

With temperatures falling and snow showers hitting the county, Exeter City Council has activated its Severe Weather Protocol (SWEP) and is making available extra accommodation for rough sleepers to come in out of the cold.

The protocol allows the Council to work with its partner agencies Julian House, BCHA and St Petrocks to organise accommodation for anyone rough sleeping or at risk of rough sleeping during severe weather.

Temperatures tonight and Thursday are expected to dip below zero and there is a possibility that the freezing conditions might go on into the weekend....

2019 Prince of Wales Award now open for business in Devon

The Devon County Agricultural Association (DCAA) has announced the launch of The Prince of Wales Award 2019.

The Award, which the DCAA has run for 34 years, is open to Devon-based community projects. Entries are encouraged from all areas of the community, from schools through to small farm diversification projects. The emphasis, reflecting HRH the Prince of Wales’ personal beliefs, is on sustainability and young people.

Entries are judged by a panel from the DCAA and the winner is selected based on their outstanding contribution.

Winners receive a cheque for £1000...

Antiques bonanza from Millers at The Anchor

Chilcotts Auctioneers is to sell a variety of antiques and other items of interest from the clearance of waterside hotel, Millers at The Anchor in Porlock Weir.

The Honiton based auctioneers were invited to collect the items by Somerset hoteliers Nigel and Anne Way, who recently purchased the leasehold of the three-storey building with the intention of creating a health and wellbeing hotel.

The Ways bought the contents as part of the deal. When Anne viewed the hotel for the first time, she commented that the hotel was “like the Marie Celeste”, with sheets still on the beds...

Princesshay announces charity partnership with Living Options Devon

Princesshay has announced Living Options Devon as its charity of the year for 2019. The Devon-based charity works to ensure that people with disabilities and Deaf people have the opportunity to live the life they choose.

Living Options will be launching the partnership on 8th February 2019 in Princesshay where its ‘See Hear On Wheels’ bus will be in the centre.

Devon's rowers finish Atlantic challenge to build plastic-free legacy

Row for the Ocean has completed the world's toughest row to raise awareness of ocean plastic pollution for South West charity Surfers Against Sewage.

The four-woman team, three of whom belong to Exeter Rowing Club, were the first all-female crew to reach the finish line of the 2018/19 Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge.

With 3,000 miles behind them, the ocean adventurers arrived in Antigua after 43 days, 2 hours and 20 minutes at sea.
