Conservatives celebrate investment in Mamhead Slipway

Members of the Conservative Group on EDDC and Exmouth Town Council saw for themselves how work is progressing on the new £1.2 million Mamhead Slipway when they visited the project on Monday (7 March). The first task of contractors Raymond Brown Construction Ltd is to clear the Mamhead Gardens area to the side of the existing slipway, which will allow towing vehicles and trailers to manoeuvre, making access to the new ramp easier. Donor match woman inspired to run

Discovering she was a match for a patient in need of a lifesaving blood stem cell donation has inspired a woman from Exeter to take part in a 15k run to raise funds for the charity Delete Blood Cancer UK.

Carole England registered with the charity several years ago and was surprised to be recently called to be told that she had a matching tissue-type to a patient in need of a blood stem cell donation.

Exeter smokers urged to quit for good

No Smoking Day 2016 takes place today (Wednesday 9 March) – and people in Exeter are being urged to take their first step towards giving up the habit for good by contacting the Devon Stop Smoking Service for support.

The annual No Smoking Day campaign is now in its 33rd year and the theme this time is ‘Proud to be a Quitter’.

While studies show that two thirds of smokers want to quit, nearly one in five adults in the UK continue to smoke.

The figure is higher in Exeter, where 23% of adults smoke.

A medical student who has embraced a wide range of roles is celebrating winning the University of Exeter Medical School’s Quintiles Women in Science Award ahead of International Women’s Day.

University expertise key in “treasure” inquest

University of Exeter expertise has helped uncover the origins of treasure found by a metal detector on Devon farmland.

Danielle Wootton, Devon Finds Liaison Officer for the Portable Antiquities Scheme, based at the University of Exeter, identified the owner of the 350-year-old silver seal matrix or “stamp”.

It was officially declared as treasure today at an inquest, the first case heard at the new Plymouth Coroners Court following its official opening by Admiral Sir James Burnell-Nugent, the High Sheriff of Devon.

Junior doctors have started a48 hour strike in response to the Government’s decision to impose a new contract on the profession
