Police have closed the road near Topsham due to a collision between a motorbike and Jeep

At approximately 3.40pm on Tuesday 15 April, police were called to a road traffic collision near to the Retreat Drive in Topsham to reports that a motorcyclist had been in collision with a car. The motorcyclist had a pillion passenger at the time of the collision and both are injured. The vehicles involved are a Jeep and a Suzuki motorcycle. There are no details of injuries at this time but ambulance crews are in attendance and the road has been closed at the scene and is likely to remain...

Council to discuss demolishing library

Plans to demolish and redevelop the Topsham library building are due to be discussed by Exeter City Coucnil’s planning committee next week. The proposals submitted by the Estuary League of Friends (ELoF) seek full planning permission to demolish the existing building and replace it with a 2-storey contemporary building to act as a community hub facility. The discussion of the plans come as Devon County Council begin consultation on the future of its library services. Double Devon Cup Rugby success

Never before has Exeter School played rugby in April but after the appalling winter the U16 and U15 Devon Cup Finals were played on Wednesday (2 April) at Topsham Rugby Club.

Although it was Exeter School's hockey term, the teams trained for a fortnight leading up to the final and soon honed their rugby skills and fitness.

On the night, the U15 faced a formidable Coombeshead team to whom they had lost in the semi-finals last year. The game started at high tempo and it was clear to see it would be an extremely physical encounter.

Topsham sandbags to be collected

People in Topsham are being asked to keep roads clear of parked vehicles when the City Council collects its sandbags on Friday (7 March). The bags were used in Topsham during the recent bad weather, helping to prevent more than 40 properties from flooding.

The local authority will be sending a lorry around to retrieve the bags from outside individual properties.

Residents can keep the bags if they wish but these will need to be taken inside or stored out of sight, otherwise they will be picked up by the Council.

Reed Revival on the Exe

The first water reed to be harvested in Devon in 25 years has been cut by scythe on reed beds opposite Topsham on the Exe estuary. Scythe practitioner, Chris Riley spent a labour intensive week harvesting just over an acre of water reed, which can reach up to 10ft high. “Water reed is an untapped resource, because of its inaccessibility and the manual labour involved in cutting it.”

Severe gales and risk of floods remain

Gale force winds are forecast for the rest of this week as the relentless storms continue to batter the South West.

The Met Office’s chief forecaster said: “With ongoing flooding in some places, any further rain will only add to the problems. Very gusty winds may be an added hazard in places.”

Fire Service called to car fire in Topsham

Crews from Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were called to a car fire in Topsham this morning ( Tuesday 14th January).

A vehicle was confirmed as well alight when crews attended the incident at 9.14 this morning.

One fire appliance from Topsham attended.Crews got to work with two breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets to put the fire out.

The vehicle was severely damaged by the fire, and the cause was accidental.

People urged to protect their homes

People living close to the River Exe in Topsham and any other parts of Exeter that are at risk of flooding from tidal waters are being warned to protect their properties from an expected tidal surge tomorrow morning (Friday 3 January). The Environment Agency has issued severe flood warnings for coastal flooding for Friday morning. From around 6am and throughout the morning, waves are expected to reach up to 5m in height and combined with heavy rainfall and high winds, flooding may occur.
