Calling all extreme event fans: Wild Tri is on its way!

An exciting new event comes to Devon for the first time later this year when Hospiscare hosts Wild Tri, and its big brother, Wild Tri Extreme.

This will be a wild take on a triathlon, and promises to be an exhilarating experience that will challenge hard-core extreme event enthusiasts, as well as novices and those who like their events just a tad less challenging. The event will take place near Okehampton on 14 September, allowing plenty of time for preparation.

Hospiscare Men’s Walk raises £67,000 with money still rolling in!

Instead of snow, it was high winds and rain that tested the ever growing band of men who took part in Hospiscare ’s Men’s Walk this year. Just under 1000 resilient men signed up for the challenge, making it Hospiscare’s most successful Men’s Walk to date.

The weather conditions were again challenging but spirits were high as the walkers set off from the Double Locks pub. Along the route they were buoyed by an amazing team of dedicate volunteers offering support and encouragement. Rachel Hamilton, 27 from Exeter, is a Hospiscare staff nurse and has been working for the local charity on the ward at Searle House for two years. At the end of 2018 Rachel married Ben Turner who also has connections to Hospiscare volunteering as a Trustee.

The wedding took place at Dartington Hall at Christmas and as Rachel is a member of the Hospiscare Choir it seemed only natural to ask the Choir to sing during their ceremony. Rachel who has always loved singing, joined the Hospiscare choir’s soprano section as soon as she became a Hospiscare nurse.

Hospiscare’s annual Coffee Morning event is now under way. Throughout the area, people are signing up to raise funds for the local charity by holding coffee mornings in their homes, community halls and even their local parks. Businesses, too, are getting ready to bake and boil for Hospiscare.

Last year, Hospiscare supporters held more than 100 coffee mornings, together raising over £15,000. The charity is hoping to beat that target this year and hoping to raise a whopping £30,000.

Three years ago, local charity Hospiscare teamed up with Seaton & District Hospital League of Friends to start the Seaton Hospiscare@Home service in response to the needs of people in Seaton.

This service provides 24/7 hands-on nursing support at home for people with a life-limiting illnesses who are in the final months or weeks of life, enabling patients to be cared for and to die at home, if that is their wish.

This year as part of their annual support of hospices throughout the country the Provincial Grand Master of Devonshire Rt. W. Bro. Ian Kingsbury can be seen presenting a certificate denoting the £800 given on behalf of the Devonshire Freemasons and the Masonic Charitable Foundation to Denise Hook, Sarah Burns and Chris Webber at Hospiscare’s Pine Lodge Day Hospice in Tiverton.

Darts Farm Santa's Grotto raises funds for Hospiscare

One of the highlights of the festive period is a visit to Father Christmas. Last month, Father Christmas was stationed at Darts Farm throughout December in his magical grotto raising a fantastic £2,385.40 for local charity, Hospiscare. Exeter’s Christmas Trees raise over £5,000 for Hospiscare

Hospiscare vans and volunteers were out in force last weekend collecting over 500 Christmas Trees across the city.

Exeter residents were able to have their tree collected in exchange for a donation and the initiative raised over £5,000 for the local charity that cares for people who have been given a terminal diagnosis.

Louise Beeken, Head of Fundraising said: “It costs £21,000 a day to run Hospiscare services, caring for people at the end of their life in their homes or at the hospice. We raise this through the generous donations and gifts in wills of the local community....

Hospiscare is starting 2019 with a new leader at the helm. Peter Brennan has taken on the role of Chief Executive Officer for the local charity after former CEO Glynis Atherton retired at the end of last year. The charity which provides end of life care for patients and their families in Exeter, Mid and East Devon needs to raise an annual sum of £7 million to care for the growing local population.
