Matalan announces relocation of Exeter Store

Leading fashion and homewares retailer Matalan have announced the relocation of their current Exeter store.

The new, bigger and better store opens Thursday 21 November at the Stone Lane Retail Park on Marsh Barton in Exeter.

The new store is three times larger than th current store on Haven Banks and will see a larger offering of products including The Statements collection and a homeware section, bringing you this season's must have home essentials making staying in the new going out.

Wellies at the ready... there's more wind and rain on the way

The clocks going back signal the end of summer and it seems the weather has duly obliged.

The beginning of half term week didn't start too well and it seems it will end in similar fashion.

New homes needed for children waiting to be adopted

Thirty three children in Devon are currently waiting to be adopted, if adopters were available, says Devon County Council as it launches a campaign to encourage more prospective adopters.

Devon County Council's Devon Adoption service has children ranging in ages from six months to eight years, including sibling groups, waiting for a loving, safe, permanent home.

The service has, this year, cut the length of time it takes to approve adoption applications in a move to make the process simpler, and to encourage more adoptive parents to come forward.

Folk Singer Jim Causley pays musical tribute to Charles Causley’s poems

On 6 November, the University of Exeter will be hosting a special gig by renowned Devon folk singer, Jim Causley.

At the gig, Jim, accompanied by guitarist Lukas Drinkwater, will be singing songs he has crafted from the words of poems by Charles Causley, one of Cornwall’s most celebrated 20th century poets and a distant relative of the folk singer. Charles Causley’s papers, including draft manuscripts of the poems which Jim Causley set to music, are held in the University’s Heritage Collections. Have you got what it takes - to take on the world famous Royal Marines endurance training course - in the name of charity? 6 and 7 September will see the 24th annual running of this historic event in the heart of Devon.

The Commandant of the nearby Marine training centre has given permission for civilians to attempt the very same training course that the Royal Marines use each and every day.

Hospiscare is thrilled to have been nominated as one of the three charities to gain from Chelsea Building Society’s ‘Charity Choice’ Scheme. Members of Chelsea Building Society and the general public are able to visit the South Street, Exeter branch, until 8 November to vote for their favourite local charity to receive the Charitable Foundation’s support.

Search for missing Exeter man

Police in Exeter are appealing for the public's help to find a missing man, Police are concerned for the welfare of 51 year-old Robert Salter who lives in the St Davids area of the city and was last seen at around 1pm on Friday, October 11, 2013. Robert is described as a white man between 5’ 7” and 5’ 10” tall, of slim build with short dark brown hair. He may be wearing a cream fleece and a black leather jacket and using a walking stick. University's ‘Haunted Halloween Hobble’ to raise money for Hospiscare

The University of Exeter Students’ Guild and local charity Hospiscare are calling for adventurous families to join them for their ‘Haunted Halloween Hobble’ on the evening of Halloween, this Thursday 31 October.

The University’s team of student volunteers will be dressing up to create a spooky walk around the Streatham Campus. The event offers a family friendly alternative to trick or treating and is set to be an enjoyable spooky occasion. There will be lots of activities to get involved with including apple bobbing and a fancy dress parade with prizes for the best outfit.

Melting Arctic sea ice could increase summer rainfall in northwest Europe suggests new study

A new study offers an explanation for the extraordinary run of wet summers experienced by Britain and northwest Europe between 2007 and 2012. The study found that loss of Arctic sea ice shifts the jet stream further south than normal resulting in increased rain during the summer in northwest Europe.

Dr James Screen from the University of Exeter used a computer model to investigate how the dramatic retreat of Arctic sea ice influences the European summer climate. He found that the pattern of rainfall predicted by the model closely resembles the rainfall pattern of recent summers....
