Increasing risk of “Extreme El Niños”, research shows.

The risk of extreme versions of the El Niño weather phenomenon will double over the coming decades due to global warming, new research has shown.

The frequency of ‘extreme El Niños’ could see a twofold increase as the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean warms faster than the surrounding regions.

The last major events in 1982-3 and 1997-98, when sea surface temperatures exceeding 28°C developed in the normally cold and dry eastern equatorial Pacific, caused a massive reorganisation of global rainfall.

Thomas Waldrom says he is “excited” by the challenge that lies ahead after he today sealed a move to the Exeter Chiefs from Aviva Premiership rivals Leicester Tigers.

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service has leapt up to 54th place in Stonewall’s Top 100 Employers list.

This makes the Service one of the UK’s leading organisations for lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) equality, according to Stonewall, the national LGB campaign and support group.

The Service’s employee network Fire Pride has again been recognised by Stonewall as a 'Star Performer Network Group,' one of 75 groups nationwide to be recognised in this way.

Bat’s sea crossing is first from UK to mainland Europe

A tiny bat found in the Netherlands is believed to provide the first direct evidence that British bats migrate over the sea between the UK and mainland Europe.

The bat, a Nathusius’ pipistrelle, flew from Blagdon near Bristol across the country and over the North Sea before settling in a farm building near the coast in Friesland – a direct journey of 596 kilometres (370 miles).

Bat experts in both countries are working together to learn more about this remarkable journey and its implications for bat conservation and offshore windfarms.
