Calls to suspend Enviroment Agency cuts

Professional union, Prospect has urged the government to suspend its job cuts at the Environment Agency in the light of the recent widespread flooding.

The Agency has confirmed that it will be cutting 1,500 jobs including some from flood protection as part of the government’s latest round of austerity cuts.

Although it is unclear which area of the organisation will see the job losses but the union claims that 550 jobs related to flood protection could be lost.

A Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs spokesman said the agency was making its own choices...

New research by scientists at the University of Exeter has shown that cells demonstrate remarkable flexibility and versatility when it comes to how they divide - a finding with potential links to the underlying causes of many cancers. Update: Eldery woman hit by Car

Police are appealing for witnesses after an elderly woman was injured in a collision involving a blue BMW.

The collision took place on 02 January 2014 at 12:40pm.

Police have said the collision occurred when the woman crossed Jubilee Drive from Barrowdale Close in Exmouth.

The woman is local and 81-years-old.

She was taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital with serious injuries.

The road was re-opened on 02 January 2014 at 6pm.

One in eight people in the South West fear they won’t be able to afford to pay the rent or mortgage at the end of this month, according to new research from Shelter released today.

The research, based on a YouGov survey of over 4,000 British adults, suggests that millions of us across the country will be starting the New Year worried about whether we’ll be able to keep their home.

People urged to protect their homes

People living close to the River Exe in Topsham and any other parts of Exeter that are at risk of flooding from tidal waters are being warned to protect their properties from an expected tidal surge tomorrow morning (Friday 3 January). The Environment Agency has issued severe flood warnings for coastal flooding for Friday morning. From around 6am and throughout the morning, waves are expected to reach up to 5m in height and combined with heavy rainfall and high winds, flooding may occur. Firefighters to strike during high flood risk

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) is due to strike between 6:30am and 8:30am tomorrow morning (3 January) during a period of high flood risk.

The Met Office Yellow Weather Warning is to stay in place until late on friday night and heavy rainfall is expected tomorrow morning.
