A Paignton Zoo gorilla has joined the Royal Navy on a voyage to the Antarctic.

The adventurous ape, named PEG – Polar Explorer Gorilla - has sailed on board HMS Protector, the Royal Navy’s ice patrol ship. And fittingly, this plastic Paignton Zoo gorilla will be painted with an image of a Living Coasts' macaroni penguin, alongside a number of other penguin species.

The curious arrangement came about after the Executive Director of Paignton Zoo and Living Coasts, Simon Tonge, was invited to lunch on board ship with other dignitaries. Simon: “During conversation the...

Debutant Ceri Sweeney may have provided the spearhead to the attacking edge of the Exeter Chiefs on Saturday, but the Welshman was quick to pay tribute to the defensive efforts of his team-mates as they kicked-off their LV= Cup campaign on a high note.

The 33-year-old fly-half slotted 14 points, including the conversion to Sireli Naqelevuki's second half try, as the Chiefs saw off cup holders Harlequins 19-5 at a packed Sandy Park.

Having trailed to an early Paul Sackey try, the Chiefs powerfully hit back to not only record a notable scalp against Conor O'Shea's side, but...

My Brother My Enemy

On 24th November 1999 my stepmother gave my brother her General Power of Attorney giving him absolute power over all her finances. She did not receive separate legal advice. It was witnessed by one very elderly neighbour. On 3rd March 2000, only three months later, my stepmother gifted her luxury penthouse apartment to my brother "in consideration and recognition of financial debts incurred by my late husband". The only outstanding debt my father had when he died was to glaziers for £3422.16, which I paid.

None of this came to my attention until after my stepmother's death in 2007...

Puss in Chutes Skydive... we did it!

On Sunday 6th October our Charity Skydive took place at Dunkerswell Airfield (Honiton) in aid of Exeter Axhayes Cats Protection Adoption Centre.

Staff and volunteers have spent months raising sponsorship and organising fund raising events such as our Puss in Chutes coffee morning and car boot sales.

They were very lucky with the weather, all that week it had rained, but Sunday was a lovely warm sunny day for our skydivers. Supporters had the privilege to watch our skydivers in action and of course they had their cameras to take lot photos of the day. Some of the staff and a...

TED EXCLUSIVE: My chat with Luke Friend ahead of Big Band week

Our boy Luke Friend absolutely smashed it on last weekend's X Factor with the judges labelling him the "dark horse of the competition".

It's Big Band week, perhaps not the best genre for Luke, but we have no doubt that he will silence the sceptical and deliver another mind-blowing performance.

It's been an incredibly busy week for Master Friend, having returned home to Exeter on Tuesday he lost an important day of rehearsals so this week's catch up was short and sweet.

OJ - What was it like coming back to Exeter after the journey you've been on so far? LF - It was...

Adoption centre launches 'Santa Paws Appeal'

Exeter Axhayes Adoption Centre has launched an appeal for Christmas.

The centre has 200-plus cats and kittens in its care, all looking for new homes. Sadly this means that many cats and kittens have to spend Christmas and New Year in the centre.

This year the Adoption Centre has launch its Santa Paws Appeal.

The idea is a simple one. They are asking that people fill a box, similar in size to a Felix cat food box with cat toys, food, treats, possibly a Christmas card. Then wrap it up and donate it to the centre.

Boxes can be taken to the centre or dropped off...

Cough or cold? Take care, not antibiotics!

A doctor from Devon has reminded people of the importance of using antibiotics wisely to help prevent the increase in antibiotic resistance.

Antibiotics Awareness Day takes place on 18 November and Dr David Gwynne, a GP from Devon and a clinical lead for medicines optimisation at Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), has backed a European campaign that encourages responsible use of antibiotics.

Studies show that patients are less likely to ask their GP for antibiotics if they are advised what to expect during the course of their illness....
