Immune system linked to lower heart attack risk, suggests study

Measuring antibody levels in the blood could be used to detect a person’s heart attack risk after researchers, part-funded by the British Heart Foundation (BHF), discovered that higher levels of these antibodies are linked to a lower heart attack risk.

Archaeologists lead community dig on lost Dartmoor Manor

From Monday 27 June until Saturday 2 July 2016 archaeologists will be returning to the site of North Hall Manor in Widecombe-in-the-Moor to continue investigations into this intriguing site.

This will be the third season of excavation. The first phase in 2012 targeted the medieval manor site and revealed wall footings, boundary works and pottery that strongly suggest a high status medieval building once stood in the area.

The excavation this year will continue to investigate some of the features unearthed in previous digs with the hope of finding out more about their age...

Devon and Cornwall battle it out in reading extravaganza

Over 1,300 primary school children across Devon and Cornwall will be picking up their books in a bid to be crowned the champions of a unique reading challenge called One Million Minutes .

The competition, run by award-winning education charity Achievement for All, challenges primary school classes across the country to read for as many minutes as they can in one week.

The class which manages to clock up the most number of minutes and top the leaderboard by the end of the week will win a brand new reading corner for their school with books of their choice, worth over £1,000...

Exeter couple show how #ToiletsSaveLives

Neil and Alison Heard will head to the Glastonbury Festival with WaterAid this week to rally support for the charity’s #ToiletsSaveLives campaign that calls on world leaders to reach everyone, everywhere with taps and toilets.

The couple have supported WaterAid for many years, and this will be the third year they have volunteered at Glastonbury the charity. They will be working alongside an army of 470 dedicated WaterAid volunteers making a splash at Worthy Farm this year.

Fixtures confirmed for Mitsubishi Motors Exeter 7s

The pools and fixtures for next month's Mitsubishi Motors Exeter 7s have been confirmed as Sandy Park prepares to host the Rugby Europe Grand Prix Sevens Series for the second time.

The tournament, which takes place July 9-10, forms a key part of GB Sevens' preparations for Rio with the wider training squad competing as two teams, the GB Lions and GB Royals.

GB Royals will face Portugal, Poland and France during match day one while GB Lions will take on Belgium and Italy before concluding day one against Germany. The full schedule can be found here .

Big Screen in the Park

Big Screen in the Park returns to Exeter this summer with not five, but six nights of cinematic magic under the stars.

A different film will be showing on each of the six nights in Northernhay Gardens, from 9-11 August.

With Mexican street food, local ale and ciders and delicious coffees from the BikeCaffe, grab your friends and celebrate the biggest Exeter Big Screen in The Park ever.

Gates open at 7.30pm with films starting at 9pm daily.

Tickets are £5 in advance or £6 on the gate. It costs an additional £1 to bring your own chair chair.
