Social enterprise focus for Devon Youth Service future

Social enterprises and organisations pursuing a public service mission are being invited to put forward their plan for the future running of Devon’s youth services.

Devon County Council approved proposals to divest the service to an independent organisation, such as an employee-led public service mutual or other social enterprise in October last year, and is now welcoming bids from those who want to deliver the service on their behalf from 1 February 2017.

Devon backs the Brexit

Voters in Devon have backed the rest of the country in voting to leave the EU.

A majority of 55 to 45 % of those in the county backed the Brexit.

Voters in East Devon, Mid Devon, North Devon, Plymouth, Teignbridge, Torbay, Torridge and West Devon voted to leave.

In Exeter, 55% voted to remain, by 35,270 votes to 28,533, and the turnout was 74% and in the South Hams Remain won with 29,308 votes to 26,142.

Nationally Leave won by 52% to 48%. UKIP leader Nigel Farage hailed it as the UK's "independence day" but the Remain camp called it a "catastrophe"....

Disabled people still face barriers in SW workplace

People with physical and mental disabilities still face significant barriers in the workplace, a new Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) survey of senior British SME decision-makers suggests.

Nearly half (45%) of SME senior decision makers surveyed by YouGov for RICS said disabled people would find it ‘difficult’ in their workplace and 16% felt disabled people were not generally supported in their workplace. 70% of the RICS membership in the UK is made up of SME’s.

Appeal after man assaulted at taxi rank

Police investigating an assault on a man at a taxi rank in Newton Abbot and are appealing for information.

Three men approached the victim on Queen Street, near Lloyds Bank, on Wednesday 4 May 2016 at around 6.30pm.

The 41-year-old local man was punched to the ground and the men continued to attack him.

The suspects stole a pair of sunglasses and some clothing from the victim that he had just purchased, and then ran off in the direction of Lloyds Bank.

The victim suffered chest and facial injuries as a result and he received treatment at Torbay Hospital....

A team of 7 women from Bradley Estate Agents in Exmouth have signed up for this year’s Twilight Walk on the 9th July.

The 5 or 10 mile sponsored walk round Exmouth is being held to raise much needed funds for local charity Hospiscare.

Fraudsters jailed after targeting Tiverton victim

Fraudsters who preyed on vulnerable people across the UK and Channel Islands, by stealing money from their bank accounts, have been jailed.

Six offenders, aged between 21 and 45, have been jailed for a total of more than 20 years at Bristol Crown Court for their crime, which involved duping more than £1.3m from vulnerable and elderly victims, including many living in the south west of England. A seventh person has been given a nine month custodial sentence (suspended for two years).
